Gateway quality and prices?

Mar 12, 2005 6:56AM PST

I see that Gateway is selling a notebook with 2.8GHz, 80GB hard drive, 1GB memory, for about $1500? How can the price be that low, and how does their quality compare with Dell and HP? How is their service? India?

service

I can't respond to the question regarding the price of the notebook, but I've been a GW customer for over ten years, and only because I've found their support to be better than the major player, that being Dell. I've only had GW desktops, but I've been pretty satisfied with their tech support... wait times, compentency, ability to understand the person on the other end of the phone. That having been said, and looking at the current price of GW stock (under $6.00 a share), I'd think carefully. My new notebook will likely be an HP z5000 (or it's replacement with the new AMD mobile chip set).

HP/Compaq? rank order
Mar 18, 2005 1:39AM PST

I've heard so much negativity about HPs & Compaqs... I guess you hear good & bad about every manufacturer and it makes buying very HARD. If you had to rank order notebook manufacturers in order of best to worst, how would you rank them?

Hmmm...

I'd say IBM, HP...maybe Sharp after that. Dell tends to be hit or miss (i.e. you're either lucky, or you're screwed), and I have no info about any other makers. (Oh, yeah, except for MDG...a Canadian maker...total crap, but I'll never own one.)

IBM: I have a laptop. No problems with it except the price I paid for it.

HP: I have a printer, and I've heard good things about their computers, not their service.

Sharp: We have two, a desktop (one of the last they ever made) and a laptop. Good overall computers, but the laptop runs a little hot.

In any case, check out Complaints.com to see how these companies have been behaving lately. Wink

You can...

check them out on www.complaints.com and compare them to any of the other brands you've mentioned. As far as I know, Gateway makes good stuff. However, I don't know anything about their service/tech support.

Hope this helps you! Wink
