Gateway programmable keyboard.

May 30, 2009 2:43PM PDT

I recently upgraded from a Gateway 300S PC with a Windows XP 32-bit OS to an Acer Aspire X1700 PC with a Windows Vista 64-bit OS. The Acer came with a Fisher Price tinker toy generic keyboard. The Gateway keyboard is programmable and works perfectly except for the programmable function keys at the top. I would really like to keep the luxury of accessing the Internet and e-mail servers with a "one button touch" format. I have not found anything that says (or doesn't say) that these two components are compatible. Any suggestions or references would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Why Not Just Try It?

Turn off the Acer, unplug the current keyboard and plug in the Gateway version. The basic keyboard should be recognized by Vista and simply work.. The special programmable keys should be the only problem, especially since the new machine is a 64 bit version of Vista.. As such, you may need a special keyboard driver for the Acer..

Check the Gateway site for your model number and see if there is a keyboard driver for your machine.. If the keyboard is functioning fully AND there is a driver available AND it supports Vista 64, then try installing it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for giving me a direction. That's probably what I need, a driver for the new system.
