gateway notebook,will not completely boot, what can I do?

I only get the wallpaper and nothing more. Not even the taskbar at the bottom. Not even the start button at the bottom left.

You could install the OS from the maker's restore media or think if you are ready to diagnose this banged up operating system.

The symptom you reported does not reveal anything specific so the cure so far is to start over.
