If this laptop works in other hot spots. Most common problem is when the wifi card's antennas are not plugged in.
i have just gotten a 10MB broadband service from Brighthouse in central Florida (Time Warner).
wireless cable router: Ubee Model U10C022
Computer: 64 bit Vista system Gateway MD2614 laptop
Aireless Netork Adapter - Atheros AR5B91
Driver File Version 126.96.36.199
I have disabled and enabled hardware in device manager, rebooted.
I downloaded and installed updates from support.gateway.com:
"Wireless_Atheros_v.188.8.131.52_Vista_all.zip - Atheros Wireless Driver Version: 184.108.40.206
Supports: Windows Vista (64-bit), Windows Vista (32-bit)
Note: This file contains the Windows Vista (32-bit or 64-bit) Atheros wireless driver for the computer models and components listed."
The problem remains - the Gateway computer will not connect to the router unless i am 2 feet away from it, and signal strength still only shows 2 green bars out of 5.
I have 2 other laptops (Macbook and HP Pavilion dv6000 running Vista and my iPhone) connected to the router at full strength with no problem, and the Brighthouse tech connected his computer to it as well.
This Gateway needs to be in another room, but only says "cannot find wireless network". point A (where router sits) to Point B (where Gateway sits) is 50 feet at most, and the tech said this router can broadcast "250 feet".
i can connect to the router when standing next to it, then when i walk to the other room, it drops. Both other laptops work fine in the other room.
so, is the radio in the router bad? is the antenna in the Gateway bad? is it a software problem?
