Question

Gateway E4100 Blue Screen

Apr 26, 2012 4:03AM PDT

P4 3.2 HT 2 GB RAM nvidia geforce agp 512 MB on board LAN on board sound 2 EIDE HDD 1 DVD-RW XP Pro SP3

Blue screen happened on reboot. STOP: 0x0000000A (0x000000E8, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x20702A16) Stated system recovered from a serious error, cause unknown. Could be a faulty driver or hardware when troubleshooting dialog box sent off to Microsoft.

Ran chkdsk C: /f/v no errors immediately after crash.

Computer was very slow and sluggish just before crash, it does this sometimes and will freeze on reboot. Force quit is necessary when this happens.

How to get sfc to look for and see the service pack folder when install cd not available? Where to get said cd?

Eh, it's the hardware?

Thanks.

Will look for BAD CAPS and if good, go to new heat sink.

Then what?

I didn't write it was the hardware.

But shared what we would do before we consider reloading the OS and other software work. The machine is old enough that we know to get the maintenance done so we don't waste time on chasing software ghosts.

Bob,

Thank you. CPU paste is done, caps fine.

Thank you again for the heads up. I have just cleaned the same machine again as Speedfan was reporting CPU temps as high as 90 degrees Celsius under load, and once again the cpu fan had dust packed against the heat sink, cleaned and renewed the same cpu with new paste as long as I was in there. Canned air is the thing to use here, no dust anywhere in system this time around.

Ambient temperature in room was 86 degrees Fahrenheit at time last two readings were taken. First link is prior to second cleaning.

Crash reported at beginning of this thread was likely due to transient overheating.

Replaced the original case fan with new as it was rattling, but new case fan will not run at motherboard connection. Why is that? Have it connected to a molex plug at the moment.

new case fan will not run at motherboard connection. Why is

"new case fan will not run at motherboard connection. Why is that? Have it connected to a molex plug at the moment."

There is only so many mill-amperes available and so what you did is common and accepted.

Thank you for the support here

So the system is ok with the new case fan running as is?

When the old case fan was installed and in original configuration, at cold boot b4 BIOS init, the case fan would roar for a second or so, then go quiet. It also gave a speed reading at Speedfan Fan4, it showed variable on demand. Of course, with the new configuration, cannot read speed at Fan4 anymore.

Is there a BIOS setting to possible detect the new case fan at the motherboard port connection? Or insufficient mill-amperes supply is the cause? I looked at the new fan, said to draw less current than old model. Old rated at 0.45 A, 12 VDC.

Should be fine.

There is a way to get the RPM showing but unless you are a good electronics tech or engineer I have to bow out. It is done by using the +12V for the fan power and running the tach signal to that connection. But for a P4 machine I would not do that.

If the motherboard can't drive the fan the only fix is a new motherboard. Which I think for P4 machines is out of the question.
