And did you try Windows' Safe Mode.

Remember Windows Safe Mode is all over the web as to how so I didn't copy that here.

keyboard is the original keyboard that come with gateway computer when purchased new. i have seen a fast flash of boot menue if it might help. it says select a boot first device. choises being removable, hard disk, cd rom, and network, with removable selected. it has arrows to select but it flashes so fast you don't have time to move them or see it good. i did luck out and get a picture if this might help.

That sounds like the old stuck key symptom.

Try another keyboard. This is not to write it's this but something I've encountered. Past that, I have to write "it's broken."

the first key to do that is usually

a wonky space bar, which also serves as a select key. Be nice if they'd actually put some springs in them instead of those wire reinforcers. One day I must spring the bucks for a clicky clacky.

The 2 worst keyboards I had ever.

1. Was the original issue IBM AT clacker. I think we put 10 of those in a "computer room" and when folk were on all 10, what a racket.
2. The "Squeaker." It wasn't that way by design, but imagine keys and made a plastic squeak as you used them. Thankfully it died. Must have accidentally fallen off the table, down the stairs and into the street where the bus finished off. Yeah boss, it happened just like that. Never saw that happen before.

I hate chiclet keyboards

I always prefer some tactile feeling. There's a few that do OK for a couple years of typing and are those rubber dome types which mimic the mechanicals to some degree. My favorite of those cheapies was a PS/2 Microinovations, but my latest computer had only one PS2 and the mouse was USB and the PS/2 KVM balked on the mouse, so eventually just went all USB for all three. Recently replaced the "tactile" di for a new exact same one, should be good for a couple years till I wear it out like the last one. You might have noticed extra spaces in some posts a few weeks ago and going back a few months. It was really starting to irritate me.

One day I'll get me a Cherry Brown MX and be happy for a longer time. My wife would shoot me in the middle of the night if I went for the Blues, LOL.

oh my new keyboard
Sep 11, 2015 3:04PM PDT

well, tried a new logitech K120 keyboard today. it did nothing for the problem. the screen still goes blank after the four items are flashed on the screen. i took the desktop by best buy to check out and they showed me the next screen come up normal. i wouldn't think the problem would be in the screen since it shows those four items at the start. any ideas?

Now it sounds as if the video mode is
Sep 11, 2015 3:25PM PDT

Out of range for the display. Since you can't get to safe mode, there is no easy fix.

It's going to get technical fast as we must use another boot DVD like Linux and edit the BOOT.INI file to force the video setting.

Google all about basevideo use in the boot.ini

The /basevideo switch in boot.ini forces 640x480 VGA mode.
