Gateway 6020GZ audio problems

Jul 22, 2009 4:26AM PDT

I've had this laptop for about 4 years & other than running slowly it's been ok until the last few days. After a bunch of crashes, including a 'shell' crash, & reboots, etc., my audio is static -- my OS is Windows XP, my browsers are Windows 7, or Safari, or Google Chrome. So, I uninstalled then reinstalled my Conexant AC-Link 2 Channel Audio Driver, then downloaded it again from Gateway's "support" site. I'm still getting static & distorted noise from my speakers & my headphone line when I listen to Real clips (i.e., NY Times videos) and my iPodcasts not to mention my music. Even the Windows log on sound is distorted.

My computer thinks everything is working properly.

Is there any hope (any technical solution) or should I just buty a new laptop?

Thanks, Arlene

Gateway 6020GZ audio problems (continued)
Jul 22, 2009 6:47AM PDT

Actually, looking around, I see the product description says it contains lead. And I see that on other devices too. I don't like that.

Does anyone know if I could buy some software on a CD-ROM with an audio sound card that would replace the one that come with my computer?

Thanks again. Any suggestions are welcome. -- total computer spaz

I almost just bought that, but then saw I'd need to connect it to speakers or a headphone. I just want to use my laptop speakers, assuming that's not what's broken.

So still looking for an answer -- how do I replace an internal sound card for a Gateway 6020GZ Windows XP for use with iTunes, Amazon Unbox, Real, Hulu, etc.

Thanks.
