Jan 18, 2005 10:23AM PST

I just bought a gateway 4540gz notebook from best buy. best buy and gateways website says this is a 8x write unit. but it only burns at 4x. i called customer support (yeah some support they were) and after talking to several different people they tell me the website is wrong... i talked to the guys at best buy and they said no one has brought one back or complained. is there something that i'm doing wrong?? i am using 8x memorex dvd+r disks.

any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thank you.

But let me comment that the heat generated does concern me. You may find in year 2 you'll have to replace the drive. Get the warranty...

Also, we always burn DVDs at 1/2 the media rated speed. Why? We don't want coasters. Some will scream "it shouldn't be so."

Just sharing from the trench.

Don't blame the DVD burner.

I've tried Memorex 8X DVD+R blank discs and they suck big time. Other brands such as Maxell, TDK, Fujifilm and Imation work well. Try another brand. Memorex 8X is NOT worth it.
