Gas prices - have you changed your driving habits

May 10, 2007 12:40PM PDT

Just wondering if you gone out of your way to change or curtail your driving habits. I know I have and cut down and try to consolidate as much as possible. I refrain from one stop only or rather do as much as I can while in the area of driving to reduce return trips. I hope that makes sense, but I think I've reduced at least 10-15% of driving. Any comments? -----Willy Happy

They interviewed one guy
May 10, 2007 1:32PM PDT

He said

Since my car was stolen I haven't driven as much

Myself I try and do at least 2 errands when I drive anywhere, and I only use 40 litres a month (600km/360mi)

I sometimes shut engine off if I'll be stopped longer than 1 minute, no jack rabbit starts, no hard braking.

Do as much business by phone or internet as possible.

Let' say i can't buy as much gas either. I live in a rural area and driving to anything is going to be a 4-5mi. trip provided they have what i need. -----Willy Happy

30 mi to the nearest little town and back. 38 round trip to the bank. Glad just about everything can be done online these days. If I could only get inexpensive fresh groceries and Doctor visits online. Up to 78 mi each way to work. Sure glad I'm mostly on the retired end of semi-retired.

I don't drive that much anyway, but...

remember, you could live in Canada, Norway, Israel or any of the large number of other countries where gas prices are much higher than those in the US. Our prices are still relatively low. Americans are very spoiled.

No, because.....

.... I have followed your routine for decades.

When we were raising our family it was as important to "save money". Our choices in auto buying were consistent with fuel economy. I recall when our VWs "sipped gas".

So I am used to taking care of my driving chores in one trip.

One man and no toys mind you

I buy gas for my pick-ups, and various power tools. I also need diesel for my large truck and tractors, so cost of fuel is very much on my mind. I try very hard to control my costs but no matter what i do, it never seems enough. Of course i don't drive all to anything like my main transport, the V-6 pickup. I did buy that in order to do what i have to do as nothing else comes close. I no longer have a car due to insurnace reasons as it never got used very much anything and was a reason to part with it. I got rid of the RV too, didn't use it much but was great to have. So, what I do have is a must, it would take a little more to part with anything else or simply park it for more at least for the time being. Ahhhh shoot.... enjoy -----Willy

I don't know how well....

... our "best laid plans" would work today if I wasn't retired, and had children to to drive here and there. Trying to stay within a budget must be harder as some things cannot be predicted very far in advance.

Not to sound like a pessimist, but I wonder we will see $2/gal (not including state and local taxes) gas again on a sustained basis.

I'm getting ready to mow the lawn with my little lawn tractor if the grass has dried from the morning rain. Even that takes 3/4 of a tank. Fortunately, it takes regular unleaded.

We adjusted ours last year....

....when prices were up around $3.00, basically using my car (which gets better mileage than my wife's) whenever practical to do so, consolidating trips, things like that. I also try not to gun the gas and then hit the brakes; if I know the light is red and won't change before I get to it I'll let the car coast a few hundred feet and then brake. Stuff like that.
