Garmin Nuvi 880

Nov 4, 2008 7:13AM PST

I have been advised by an online seller that the Garmin Nuvi 880 comes loaded with 2006 maps. They offered me the 2007 & 2008 maps, installed, at "half price" - $75.00. Is this legit or a rip-off?

Firstly, why would you need 2007 and 2008 updates? 2007 is already obsolete.

Secondly, unless you're buying the unit used, there's no need to buy map updates. The Garmin 880 comes with what Garmin calls the nuMaps Guarantee, which means that you get free map updates for the first 60 days after the first use of the device.

Thanks, antuan. I called Garmin yesterday, They assured me all nuvi 880's come loaded with 2009 maps. I called the online seller, who advised that only the nuvi 880's that Garmin sends to authorized Garmin dealers are loaded with the updated maps. Others get the 2006 maps and have to purchase the newer versions. When confronted with my info from Garmin, and my request to cancel my order, I was offered a $50 discount on my original purchase price. Bottom line: this seller, A camera store with the current lowest list price, is still selling the 880 at $150 below average retail cost even after charging $75 for the "updated" maps, and is rated highly by customer reviews. They have a 21 day return policy so I took a chance. However, I think their business practice is a little shady to say the least.

Hi,I purchased a Nextar P-3 GPS last year with 2006 Maps. The accuracy of the mapping software is not that great and I called the manufacturer for an updated map. They said to go to a reseller. I need to purchase a SD card with updated maps. I'd like to do so at a reasonable price. I did not see any reviews of such on CNET. Any ideas where I might find product recommendations (for the SD Maps) or does anyone have any recommendations for specific manufacturers who sell SD map updates that are accurate and well priced? Thanks
