Garcia fonts not working in Windows XP

Apr 26, 2005 10:47PM PDT

I have some font files (Garcia Light and Garcia Bold) that work when loaded into the windows/font folder on older computers - running windows98 or early XP but not on new or updated XP.
If you try to install or copy across the font file you get the message:

"Unable to install the Garcia Bold (true Type) font. The font may be damaged. Check with your font vendor about obtaining a new file"

the file works fine as I say with older windows versions.

The software company that made the cd-rom that the fonts are on, is no longer in business.

I have thousands of documents existing that use thiese fonts, so I feel pretty stuck!

How old a Windows version?

And where can I get this TTF so I can see what my font tools think of it?

I can send you the font files

Thanks for the response. I can send you the font files as an attachment - I'll need you email address. They are no longer available - I'm told the company that supplied the CD-Rom they are on no longer exists. The version of XP that the files work on is about 3 years old. If I allow updats, the font doesn't work.
I look forward to hearing from you.

good idea but it didn't work!

Thanks for your quick response. It seemed like a really good idea but it didn't work! I get the same responce when I try to install the converted back files into the windows font folder ("50%. Unable to Install. Font file may be damaged"). (I tried the mac format ones too - can't be read at all 0%). Tahnks again. Any other ideas?

Time to call Microsoft. Here's why.

Look at the results of http://www.google.com/search?num=20&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=+site%3Asupport.microsoft.com+%22Font+file+may+be+damaged%22 I find it odd that we don't see a XP or other OS article. I can almost bet Microsoft knows something that is not published.

Also, if that tool can't read the font it could be from a company that was dabbling with font "protection." If so, you may have to get someone to sit down with a font editor and recreate the font. I've seen this take a few weeks of work.

And in closing, look to the LINUX world of font tools and convertors as well. Some item there may unlock this font and be able to recreate a valid font.

As it stands I don't see a XP issue. My bet is you have a font from those days where the makers were trying to creatively break the font to stop rampant copying. And maybe Microsoft forgot something that fixed the broken font this time.

I think the font is fine with the tool but not XP
May 17, 2005 6:31PM PDT

I think you may have misunderstood my last response - or I am misunderstanding yours: the tool you recommended CAN read my font file. It converts without any problem and can be opened. Windows 95, 98 and early XP can all read the font file - allowing it to be loaded to the windows font subfolder. Newer XP and Updated XP with (I think) some security patches can't read the font files. (I only have XP home editions). Without the font files loaded, a machine can still "read" the text - it just chooses an alternative font that doesn't look right.
Thanks again for your consideration of this problem.
