Garageband/Logic Pro 8 sound issues

May 26, 2008 3:54AM PDT

I got the following computer new for Christmas:

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz

It also has 4 GB of memory. It is running in Mac OS X v. 10.5.2
I have an Apple wireless keyboard and mouse. I also have an M-audio 49-e Keystation, and an M-audio pre-usb pre-amp.

My problem with both Garage Band and Logic Pro is that when I am playing back a song, the sound will turn off. This seems to happen at random; I can't find anything that makes it do it consistently, although sometimes it will cut off if I move the mouse when the song is playing. The program keeps playing most of the time although sometimes it will lock up. I can only get the sound to return by closing and re-opening the program.

This sound problem started when I added a USB turntable that had Audacity as its software. I saw this problem on the Audacity troubleshooting site and did what they said to fix the problem. It didn't. I completely removed Audacity, but still have the problem. I got an error message the other day in Logic that said my MIDI and Audio weren't synched. I found how to fix that in the Logic manual, but it did not fix the sound problem.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help you can give me - this problem has made both programs un-usable.
