Game EXE files won't run

Aug 4, 2004 3:02PM PDT

I have recently purchased several games for my Windows XP computer, installed them correctly, then when attempting to open the exe file the cursor simply blinks for a second and then nothing happens. This has happened with three games that I recently purchased, however Unreal Tournament 2004 came out with a patch that fixed the problem. Is there a compatability issue that I may have missed or maybe some drivers that I should install? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

How old are the programs?

Brand new, just bought them at Best Buy the other day. Programs that were previously installed still work fine, but the programs that I have installed within the past few days don't work.

The games I've installed autorun when I put the CD in the drive. If I want to restart, I go to the start menu or use a shortcut. I'm not sure how you are trying to run these games. But double clicking on the .exe file isn't something I've done for years.

"then when attempting to open the exe file"....

This is truly odd. I use the menu icon the installer created. It's not assured that you can run the .exe

There can be compatibility problems in XP. Try this:
right click the exe file, and choose: send to desktop (make shortcut). Right click the shortcut, and select properties, in the popup window pick the compatibility tab, and try a few settings. BTW, did the package tnat these games came in promise that they would work in XP, or only mention say 98 or 95?
