Question

Galaxy S5, why can't I wake up with S Voice?

Apr 13, 2014 11:11PM PDT

Just got an S5 after a happy year with an S4, pretty happy with it except for one major item. There appears to be no way to start S Voice from the lock screen by saying "Hi Galaxy" like I could on the S4. There is no "Voice Command" option in "Settings",or at least I can't find it. This also makes it where I can't turn off an alarm by voice or hit snooze. Am I just missing it or did Samsung delete some very cool functionality here?

Just tap your home button

You have to double tap Home Button to access S Voice. In case you have disabled it by mistake you can also access it through the settings> toolbox option .

Why would they...

Thanks, I know I can access it that way, but why won't voice access work? Why would they take away some really cool functions like that? Apparently S Voice also no longer has a "Read Back" function for messages. Is this an Android ver. 4.4.2 issue, or a Galaxy S5 issue? All this stuff worked great on my S4, ver 4.2.2., messaging was virtually hands-free and eyes-free to send and recieve. I may return this S5 and go back to the S4; seems like I'm paying more and getting less.

A guess

To have any device constantly listening would cost a lot in battery time. Remember I'm not Samsung but an engineer and can guess why.

Hi Bob,

The S4 didn't listen constantly, you had to press the power button on the side of the phone to get to the lock screen, then say "Hi Galaxy" and you would be in S Voice. While driving, this did not require looking at the phone, or finding another button to push twice. It also would read replies back to you out loud, which the S5 apparently doesn't do, you have to read them off the screen. While I don't advocate texting while driving, the older version of S Voice was much safer.

If they fail to fix, get you money back now. At least ask the maker once. In the USA it's 1800SAMSUNG

For that you need to be in "Car Mode"...
Jul 14, 2014 6:22AM PDT

I used to have an iPhone 5 S, just got the S 5, for those capabilities you are talking about here, you have to be in "Car Mode".... which is available through the "menu" of the notification center, and if your car has bluetooth, you can "register" that connection in the locations setting, so that it goes into car mode automatically....

galaxy not 3 does all that from across the room.. NO HANDS A
Oct 7, 2014 5:03PM PDT

Note 3 is always listening and battery is better than my wifes blackberry z10 or daughters iPhone 5. Note 3 will text, make a call, set alarm, get navigation, play music without a single touch.. just speak "hi galaxy" and then ur comand. However I am on this forun because I just installed the apk for the newer svoice that is on the galaxy s5 and suddenly my note 3 would not wake just by my voice anymore.. I had to touch home button 1st. So my guess is that the s voice on gallaxy s5 isnt always listening... because now that I restored to my original version on s voice I can comand the device from across the room again. My sugestion... dowbload the apk for note 3 svoice.

Best of luck

It's not in the 5

Unfortunately, I'm angry that I spent this money for 2 features that MADE galaxy.. No, you can no longer SAY you're voice command to snooze in the alarm nor does the "wake" your phone work. I cabbie believe we spend more money to take away less features..

Ok google instead of s voice
Jul 29, 2015 6:09PM PDT

You can't because they have a different app for it now. Go into your apps and look for Google settings. Click the app and setup up voice commands. When you say "ok google" from any screen, inluding the lock screen it will show up with a speech box and you talk to it just like with s voice.
