That the user must install it?
On some other OS, just looking at some web site can cause an infection. You gotta wonder sometimes if the users are part of the solution or problem.

The user tends to have a hand in the problem indeed. Wouldn't you say so? The solution ends up coming from people who know what they're doing (ahem, myself, my fellow Mac forum members here, Geek Squad (LOL), etc.). Though I guess I don't know what I'm doing half the time, but that makes it fun I suppose.
If I read some other article right, the horse comes from not-too-nice sites and when the windows pop-up for the download authentication, etc., you'd think it would be enough to tell you that something's up. But there are people who don't care or are too ignorant/stupid to think about it.

No horse ain't gettin' anywhere near my Mac, it isn't connected to the internet XDD!
Seriously though, a *Mac* trojan horse? *chokes on coffee*
the Mac version of QT (which they have to be different to run on both), I'm pretty sure Windows people can't get it through it.
Mac users knew this was coming. This is only one of the few out there. It is likely this news will become more common until viruses for Mac become more abundant. Mac sales have been doing quite well since the release of the iPod. Won't take too long. Not exactly a good thing for us here, but by the time that this "Mac-virus birth" occurs, we'll be prepared if necessary, unless you're too cocky or carefree and think you won't get one.
This shouldn't be too surprising people! It's not good, but it was coming. And plus, this trojan isn't very likely to hitch a ride on your machine if you know what you're doing. Hmm... I hope we all know what we're doing then.

shouldn't Apple concentrate on keeping QT secure? Doesn't seem that difficult to me.
I've always had some problems with QT ever since I started using it so long ago. It always had a bug, small or large, Windows or OS X.
Of course I doubt this will happen in the near future, Apple should rewrite the entire app or replace it. I'm just not too much of a fan for it. You know, Windows has WMP, which is kind of their own iTunes+QT, so why not integrate it completely into iTunes rather than sharing files and stuff? That shouldn't be too difficult one would think.
The recording features of QT are okay, but that's in QT Pro, which is not worth $20. If you want to do stuff like that, just do it right with GB or iMovie. Not too hard anyway since they're all on a Mac.
I'm surprised that Apple hasn't tried to keep this flaw concealed. I bet this is because the user has the ultimate decision to unleash it or not, but they should attempt to do something about it if they haven't started to. Who knows what REALLY goes on at Cupertino? All those reports and vids about Cupertino stuff don't seem to cut it for me. Never mind that, though I have thought that maybe they're just all sitting around playing with their new and unreleased gadgets until they get a new idea.
Kidding.
But I do know what you mean. It wouldn't surprise me if they were indeed playing with their new gadgets at Cupertino, rather than working hard to fix bits of the OS. I think having less attention from virus writers than most other OSes has made them cocky, and it will until the day a big virus (like sasser and whatever else it was a few years ago crippled millions of Windows machines) hits a lot of Macs.
aren't always in a position to do something about it. Last I heard, Apple wasn't taking advice from us consumers. Of course a few thousand, or ten thousand, or us Mac users could band together to request stuff, but where's the point in that? I'll bet they have a dev team working on this stuff almost 24/7 and some of their thoughts are ignored just because The Steve isn't too bent on it. If you know what I mean. I think Apple hasn't grown cocky, but rather, they are a tad lazy and haven't seen fit to worry about this minor stuff right now since it's not a real issue here.
But like I said before, who REALLY knows what goes on in the secret world of Apple in Cupertino? We'll find out someday.
Microsoft aren't innocent either. I have visions of Gates playing football with his associates, sometimes.
games and plays online all-day long. His GamerScore is probably like 1mil. Maybe that's just a perk for working for MS. But would choose that over a free iPhone, discounts on Apple products that are fun to use, cool staff shirts, nice Stores... Apple has it down.
Here's what really goes on: Gates and His Royal Steveness go golfing every Sunday and think about what they can do to screw the other's company and do it after lunch. Steve was playing a good game when he thought of all of Apple's great stuff and Bill lost miserably and took out is torments by bundling them together in what we call Vista, one of the worst current OS-es today. Hahaha, that's a story there.
Looks like people are just crapping on in this thread.
This is a very primitive trojan for Mac OS X - the sort that could be written for any operating system really. But Apple does have a cavalier attitude to security, which is informally known as "turd polishing" - writing something, finding it's not secure, and then trying to patch the holes. Or worse, Apple writes something and then everyone else says "Hey, this isn't secure!".
We will see actual worms for Mac OS X - it's only a matter of time. But I think we'll see iPod worms before then.
some funny ideas around while talking about the insecurities of QT. No need to beat us down for it; it was a good discussion of opinions and facts.
You know, one man's crap like you said is another man's treasure, and everyone should have heard that somewhere else.
What's wrong with sharing ideas about what we think goes on at Cupertino? What's wrong with saying I think Apple should just rewrite QT as a new app? QT was faulty to begin with and I never liked it. The new security issues give even more proof against it, but with the recent 7.3 update, this is unlikely to happen.
Not cool. And forums are for discussing almost anything within their respective categories, so what was wrong with it anyway?
Stuff relating to Apple and MS can be discussed here, or so I thought the Mac OS category was related to Apple. I don't think I'm wrong here... maybe I bought a Pear computer instead of an Apple. Sometimes they do cover up the Apple on TV for trademark purposes. Man, now I have to look into that LOL.
