FYI: Outlook 2007 Slowdown and Update 2412171

Dec 16, 2010 4:08AM PST
Outlook 2007 Slowdown Caused by Office Outlook 2007 Update 2412171:

Updated: 12/16/2010 8:10AM MST

'A number of users are reporting performance issues with Outlook 2007 after installing update 2412171. Possible symptoms include:

• Slow performance when changing folders, especially folders that are in different message stores.
• Loss of Archive functionality
• Errors receiving mail on accounts that use Secure Password Authentication (SPA) or Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP) connections that use NTLM authentication.

How Do I Fix it?

Some people have suggested that you might be able to fix the problem by going to Tools | Trust Center | Add-ins and disabling the COM Addin for Microsoft Office Outlook Connector.

Others have suggested going to Tools | Account Settings | E-mail Accounts and doing a "Repair" on your e-mail account might help.

Otherwise, at this time the only fix for it is to uninstall update 2412171, which you can do in one of two ways:

1. (Windows 7 or Vista) Click the Start button. Control Panel > Programs, and then, under Programs and Features, click View installed updates (look at the top left). Find update KB2412171, and then click Uninstall.

(Windows XP) Click the Start button. Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. Make sure "Show Updates" is checked (at the bottom). Find update KB2412171, and then click Uninstall

2. If you can't remove the update individually, use System Restore and restore back to the point before the update was installed. See this article.

What Now?

The Outlook team has a pretty good handle on what's causing the issue now and is working hard to get it resolved. More news as soon as it becomes available.

But it Keeps Breaking?!?

Unfortunately if you have Automatic Update set to automatically install patches it may redownload and re-install the problematic patch for you. You may have to go into Automatic Updates (Control Panel) and set it to notify you of new patches rather than automatically installing them. At least until after a fix

Original source Mow Green aka Steve Wechsler. He adds:

To set Windows 7 or Vista to notify you of pending updates open Windows Update in Control Panel.
In the left frame click the Change settings link.
Under Important updates, set the drop down window to Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.
Click OK, then close Windows Updates.

So far, information gathered shows that the issue is not affecting all Users and there is no common denominator.
As more information becomes available Ben will be updating the page.

Worked like a charm for me. Moving from folder to folder is as slick as spit on a mirror!

Having problem with Outlooks slow performance since update
Dec 17, 2010 3:50AM PST

You said the update is working slick for you. Out of curiousity, are you running any add-in's on your Outlook (like the hotmail viewer). Clicking from folder to folder since the update is slow on mine (like many others). I have been running the Hotmail viewer add-in for the past couple of years now (with no problem in performance/speed up until the latest update).

outlook 2007 update

you need to uncheck the 'require logon using secure password authentication(SPA)' box ....in outlook go to tools ,account settings and then double click on the account to bring up the internet e mail settings. Tht should do it.

was already "un-checked", not the issue - 'require logon'
Dec 17, 2010 5:09AM PST

The box was already unchecked so that was not the issue (enen tried checking, closing out and then going back in and unchecking)........ Thanks for the idea, nothing ventured, nothing gained...

I had the same problem and solved it easily by uninstalling Microsoft office outlook connector.
