General discussion

Fujitsu N6010, Compaq x6000, HP zd800, or Dell Inspiron 9300

Hello! I am looking to purchase a desktop replacement laptop in the next few days and was wondering if anyone had some thoughts on the aforementioned systems.

My goal is to spend < $2500 on a machine that will have either a P4 or M (not sure which is better and I won't be carrying around much - but enough to warrant a laptop as opposed to a desktop - so battery life not as big of an issue), but I want at least a gig of RAM, a nice screen (pref 17"), the ability to play ANY game I want without having to set for lesser settings (I am not sure whether the ATI x600 or the ATI 9700 is the better card and is a x600 with 256 mB better than a 9700 with 128? - I am aware that I need a dedicated card) and a hard drive with at least 60 of storage and 5400 rpm. I need good wireless access and decent sound would be nice too, but I am willing to get external speakers if necessary.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

Nothing today I fear.

Even desktops can't run ANY game without lessor settings. The latest Doom for example can't run on any of today's hardware in its full glory. Why? It has features so that when the hardware arrives, the game doesn't have to be rewritten.

Can you be a little more forgiving in that area?

Thanks for the input. I would be happy if I can play games like Rome Total War, Age of Empires, Civilization III (and IV when it comes out) without a lot of lag and slowing when the maps or the city (in Sim City 4) get big enough - as well as other RTS games and strategy games/flight sims (first person shooters I play on my XBOX).

Dedicated video of the 9700 class with 128MB video RAM and either the 3GHz P4 lap burners or the 2+GHz Centrinos should meet the reasonable levels. Added points for not having the 4200 RPM hard disks.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it! I am leaning toward the Fujitsu, but I don't have any experience with the brand...

That's one brand we don't see often. Usually only when they are dropped or very old.

Fujitsu and Dell

The Fujitsu comprises of a MOBILE Pentium 4, SUPPORTING HT Technology. It is less powerful than a TRUE Pentium 4 with HT Technology. With your price range, A Pentium M 760 or 770 would be good. Gaming, an ATI Radeon orNvidia 256mb graphic card will play well.
