Fujifilm Finepix F30 vs. Canon Powershot SD 700 IS

by converse18 / August 4, 2006 3:23 PM PDT

Okay I have a major dilemma here. This will be my first digital camera so I want to make sure I buy the best all around camera for a decent price. I've narrowed my choices down to 2 cameras. The Fujifilm Finepix F30 and the Canon Powershot SD 700 IS. I love the battery life on the F30 but love the design as well as the image stabilization on the SD 700. Can someone please help me decide? I want a good camera that takes good indoor and good outdoor shots too. I'm really stuck and need help. I also read that there's no aperature or priority settings on the SD 700. Is that something I should pay major attention too? Please help me. Thank you!!

making a decision....

Both are GREAT cameras! The F30 is a tad chunkier but there is a slimmer version (F20). The Fuji does not have an o[ptical viewfinder.

You can't go worng with either camera, easily two of the best out there (I also include the Casio Z850/Z750).

What you need to do is go to a store and handle both camera. Which one feels best in your hends and has the best interface? Remember, one key to photography is being able to take the shot when you want to....which one is most user friendly to you???

You mentioned indoor photography.

Most people expect a digital camera to take photos indoors under artificial lights without a flash.
And they all can.........but....
you will need a tripod to get blur free photos.

With the Fujifilm F30 you have a better chance of getting blur free hand held shots.

All digital cameras let you control the shutter and aperture to some degree.
Some use "scene modes", which help in situations when you need to photograph something that requires special settings.
Most people find that this is all they need.

The advanced or "want to be advanced" photographer will choose a camera that also has manual controls.
These controls give you total control of exposure settings. This will let you get some special shots that other cameras can not.
You will have to have (or obtain) more photographic knowledge to fully take advantage of these manual controls.
Of course, you have the choice of using the manual controls or just put the camera in Auto mode and learn how to use the manual controls later.
