Never mind, definitely an issue from the gateway.
When I log in to my ftp site, I always get a timed out response.
We've recently moved and changed ISPs and have a different gateway (DSL instead of cable modem now). I use the ftp client that comes with our Win XP, and haven't had any issues. The problem isn't with our host or the computer, as I can still log in at the local coffee shop using their wireless.
The ftp is set up to run in passive mode.
I called the Actiontec gateway support and he had me put the gateway in DMZ mode but couldn't ping me or it or some such, so he said it wasn't the gateway's issue.
I double checked that my host isn't blocking my home IP and they aren't.
I checked port 21 using the instructions found here:
http://kb.siteground.com/article/FTP_times_out.html
And all I get is
220 ProFTPD 1.3.1 Server Dreamhost FTP 208.113.234.83
as the only line returned.
I sent a message to my ISP (Yahoo High Speed Internet) detailing all but this port testing business and received an e-mail advising me to call and ask for second tier support and after a lot of waiting on hold and repeating information for "report building" I was told they don't support ftp, but it also seemed that they didn't know what ftp was.
So even though I don't really know what I'm doing, I thought, well, I'll just try to start fresh and tried Filezilla and using the network configuration wizard, setup has failed every time.
Generally with a message like this:
