FSX fatal error

My system is XP pro/SP3 on an ASUS P5QL/IntelE8500/NV8800gts. I'm running FSX/Accel and it froze at startup giving me a 'fatal error' message in these areas - 'fsx.exe' 'visualfx.dll'. Suspect downloads have been uninstalled.

If SIM Has Been Uninstalled...

In reply to: FSX fatal error

..then there appear to be remnants on the machine. Have you tried using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to find and remove any remnants of the program? If not, here's the link:

A little search for those file names shows your error to be quite common.

Hope this helps.

No, FSX is still in place. The downloads mentioned were the most recent which might have corrupted the registry. Although the error seems to be common, I haven't found a cure yet. None of several registry fix softwares have come up with anything.

You've Uninstalled Completely, Then Reinstalled The Program?

In reply to: If SIM has been uninstalled

Making sure to clear the computer of all remnants, both files and registry entries, before reinstalling.

And yes, you're right. There aren't a lot of sure-fire fixes for the various problems in this program. Makes one think about the quality of the program in general....

Hope this helps.

Looks to be well discussed.

In reply to: FSX fatal error

From registry to BIOS settings to "get a job at Microsoft to fix it" and more are discussed.

http://www.visualflight.co.uk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2012 looks interesting and an uncommon fix to this one.

My advice is to look at how others fixed it, make a list of each one's solution then think which you want to try first.

FSX fatal error

It's interesting how many occurrences of FSX fatal errors involving .dll files are out there. Even more interesting is the complete lack of posted fixes. Surely not everyone is just twiddling his/her thumbs, waiting for a miracle, like me. A new wrinkle - this morning's start attempt gave the usual fatal error but the culprit file has changed from visualfx.dll to simprop.dll.

And THAT is a clue unto itself.

In reply to: FSX fatal error

When the error message is changing I know to start looking at the machine. I know to do my YEARLY cleaning which has a FINE VIDEO at http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11319_7-6240575-1.html

If that doesn't get I move to the CPU heatsink, wipe off the old compound, put fresh one and try again. If I find an overclocked machine I write "sorry", nod my head and let them sink back into that tar pit.

A few months ago I installed a new cpu/sink etc. and cleaned the dust. Temps are good - four case fans, PSU fan CPU fan and GPU fan. In the error report, it wants to send Microsoft, all the files suggested for investigation are located in the same folder - Doc&Sett\Name\Applications...FSX. Fsx.cfg/Scenery.cfg/dxdiag.txt/fdr.dat/DLL.xml.

Looks fatal.

In reply to: FSX fatal error

Seems MSFT has its work cut out for them. This error taught me a lesson last year. Sometimes it's just buggy.

Of course there are big issues with home built machines but let's not discuss that but sum it up as "drivers, power and more."
