Frustrated running chkdsk need help

Apr 6, 2007 10:49PM PDT

God only knows why, With a new HP laptop I upgraded from Vista Home prim. to Ultimate. When I run chkdsk in windows all untagged, reports errors... so I try to run chkdsk/f with reboot. After 6% chkdsk reports error stops and reboots without fixing...I must have tried 30 times.
Then I tried booting is a safe mode everything unchecked for booting it will run, report no errors and will fix it, but then reports my windows addition is not Genuine. I have to finagle a lot to get to msconfig to boot normally... with fear of being locked out of windows.
Downloading the upgrade, plus pc's not coming with the original disk sucks.
I have tried to reboot unchecking different items one at a time to figure out what is keeping it from correcting errors with no luck at all.
Has anyone had a similar problem and how are you taking care of it?

Is this a pirated copy of Vista?

If so, it cannot be discussed here.

No it was bought and paid for
Apr 7, 2007 2:01AM PDT

I upgraded on line with Best Buy, they were to send and email to my email address, which never came, which never came. During the upgrade process I cut and pasted the page where I bought and was charged for it,pasted in text form for a reciept... showed up on my charge. No email came with any link.... I emailed them several times with no responce. I called and spoke with a tech who said he would send me an email with a link, go back to original windows. I waited for the email before doing so... and a good thing because an email did not arrive with any link. I explained that the email address I had was a verizon email that would not allow the digital locker, but had other email address and a digital locker. This upgrad was bougth and paid for.
If it were pirated, I would know enough to eat it and suffer the consequences.

Just my thoughts.

I had helped on a Toshiba upgrade to Vista and Toshiba issued no less that 3 BIOS updates in 3 weeks time. Each time writing "must use" the latest BIOS. Many owners are deathly afraid of those updates so they'll pass on such and could see your issue.

I'm unsure which HP you have so I can't check if there were such updates but given the story so far my advice is to backup my files and run (screaming) back to XP or what did work well.

Then ask for a full refund on Vista since the support is non-existent from the seller.

I have updated the bios, but before responding checked to see if there were any other updates...I run their program for updates which shows nothing but also go to their site and check. Just now I noticed another bios update and will try it tonight while every one is out so I have no distractions while doing so.
I called Best Buys support to hear a recording today, they would be back Monday???? Monday even if this upgrade works will call again. I want since I paid for software a way to reinstall when needed, if needed and planned to let them know I would contact the charge company for a charge back if my needs are not met. I have searched the internet and this forum for fixes for my problems with not finding any results except for xp. The laptop was new and I had not put it through anything, I should not have upgraded to ultimate without knowing it inside and out first. I have purchased software on the internet before but had an exe file to install, this phanton upgrade stuff does not make me comfortable to be able to fix problems.

Got the same exact type of error going on
Apr 11, 2007 12:51AM PDT

I am experiencing the same error. Have to dual boot a new HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop with XP for a customer. Vista was pre-installed and our main work app won't run error free on Vista and won't be updated to until end of Q2. So I'm trying to resize the partition to make room for another partition for XP with GPartEd tool but getting an error stating "Cluster accounting failed at 3147732 (0x3007D4): extra cluster in $Bitmap" when the program analyzes the drive. There was a recovery partition that I deleted using the HP Recovery tool after creating the recovery DVDs for this laptop. The tool also specifies using chkdsk/f to fix in Windows but I get the same issue as the parent post. chkdsk quits after 6% stating that an unspecified error occured and boots up Vista.

Exact stop point for me
Apr 11, 2007 1:39AM PDT

Sometimes it goes to 4% sometimes at 6% it stops. I updated the bios, did not make a difference. I contacted BestBuy again with the following answer(we don't have the link any longer, don't know why you did not receive either email we sent, can't help you contact Windows market support) Heard nothing back from them either. I constantly check my junk mail folder to see an answer. I contacted my charge company. I just received and email from the charge company saying they were looking into it and tempory giving me a credit unless Best Buy request payment again. I have a single operation system on the laptop so I don't know.

vista
Apr 27, 2007 7:27AM PDT

My laptop came with the same software Vista Premium, I had not run chkdsk before upgrading to the ultimate version. please keep me up to date on on the 3rd party software with the results. Mean while I did put in a claim with my charge company for the upgrade that came with no tech, no download again option from best buys. they refunded me the money with a note waiting to hear from best buys and letting me know I could be charged again.

Similar problem...
Apr 27, 2007 4:51AM PDT

I have a similar problem, except my HP DV2210US came with Vista Premium pre-installed. I hit the problem after a Windows update failed and forced a CHKDSK on reboot. Not only that, but my keyboard quits working so I can't cancel out of CHKDSK (an external keyboard lets me cancel and boot to Vista).

Chatted online with support. The recommended defragging (not much help on basically a new laptop). They recommend a system restore now. I was going to try that, but when booting to the restore partition I noticed some utilities there before restoring.

I ran CHKDSK from the restore partition and it made it past my standard 6%. I am still waiting for it to finish, but it may be an issue with CHKDSK running on the drive it is checking. I may go out and buy a 3rd party disk utility before I waste my time restoring. Just seems weird I have seen 3 posts now with the same symptoms from people with various HP dv2000 models...all with Vista.

DV2000 with exact same issue, stops at 6%.
Apr 30, 2007 3:07AM PDT

This just started happening to me last night. I did the anytime upgrade from Vista Basic to Vista Home Premium, but I don't think that is the problem since I did so about a month ago. The upgrade probably isn't the source of the problem, but I bet it will be a pain to do a system restore and then have to upgrade all over again. Stupid Vista. I'm going to contact both Microsoft and HP about this, don't think I'd be able to fix this on my own without some help. If I get any good advice I'll be sure to post it.

Problem fixed itself.

When I restarted my computer for the umpteenth time the disk check was able to complete. No idea why, but I'm happy it worked!

DV2000 with CHKDSK problem
May 13, 2007 3:04PM PDT

All,

Thanks for your tips!

My HP DV2000 froze at CHKDSK 7% (file 77756). After reading the other posts here, I rebooted and pressed F11 to enter recovery mode.

Once in recovery mode, I selected, "Repair Hardware" then "Command Prompt" from the menu selections. After some searching I found the Windows OS files (and other important files/directories) are loaded on the D drive (>dir dHappy. So, at the command prompt I typed CHKDSK d: /f.

Check disk took about 60 seconds to complete. It found an orphan file that it fixed and a few other things.

I rebooted, and Vista started without problems.

This isn't guaranteed to help everyone, but my system is now up and running well. And it was well worth the 30 minutes I spent researching and doing this than other suggestions I came across!

It worked
Jun 1, 2007 12:56AM PDT

Same problem and good tried your approach.
chkdsk got hung infinite times at 6 % (81800 of 128000) when booting normally. The BIOS HDD check passed successfully.
I did exactly as you suggested above and now I am back to normal.
Went to Recovery mode by pressing F11 and then using command prompt executed
chkdsk d: /f
this finished in a minute or so
Rebooted.
Thank you so much.

Used this method, but
Jun 2, 2007 10:55PM PDT

I followed the directions and used this method of F11 in Recovery. Then I ran ever option..... c prompt chkdsk d:/f chkdsk c:/f each ran and corrected errors. Then typed exit which brought me back to the original screen... high lited windows directry and it ran all chkdsk 5 instead of just the 3 and then did the recovery partition, it also ran the 5. I rebooted and tried windows check for errors and the same thing happened it stopped after 2%. I am pleased to see that there is a way to fix the errors, but will continue to look to make vista work properly... I am assuming if you delete the recovery partition, you will no longer have this way to correct errors. does any one know?

RE: Used this method, but
Jun 3, 2007 10:05AM PDT

So after running chkdsk from a separate partition did windows still want to run chkdsk anyway, or did you force another chkdsk from the normal boot partition?

I didn't explore it any further. The computer seems to be working okay. I am a little frustrated with the various Vista problems, but I am sure they will be sorted out eventually.

I was a little underwhelmed with HP's support. They seem to feel that I should just reinstall, but that seems crazy to me if many people are having the same problem and we have to resort to CNET forums to figure them out.

Ran it again just to see
Jun 3, 2007 10:40AM PDT

I ran it again, just to see if somehow it corrected the problem... it did not. but this forum did show me a way to correct the other errors on the drive.

check or scan disk for Vista Premium home user question
Jan 19, 2008 6:40AM PST

How do I scan or check my disk for errors? I've searched high and low for the answer. The one I find most often (click on C drive, select Properties then Tools then Check Disk) does not work for me as "Check Disk" does not appear there for me. I am frustrated, tired and completely unable to find the answer.

The other solutions I have seen have something to do with running commands. I tried one (forget which one) and it did not work. Vista Premium must have some way to check/scan the disk. Whatever it is, they are hiding it from me. HELP!!!

Thanks all. Welcome any and all answers.

I have a Compaq Pavilion home PC with Windows Vista Premium Home 32 bit set-up in case that is pertinent. Have checked all Window, Microsoft and HP websites I could find to no avail.

Am desperate and want to keep this baby in optimal shape. Thanks again.

Frustrated running checkdisk
May 23, 2008 1:10AM PDT

Friends, If your laptop is HP and you are experiencing freezing of check disk, all you have to do is go to HP Tech Support and download the latest version of Quick Launch Button program and alas your problem is solved.
