Question

Frozen PC, High motherboard temp. Whats going on?

Apr 10, 2017 8:42PM PDT

Hey there, i've been having a problem where if i play say the Sims 4 or use any big program my PC will freeze and the only way to un-freeze it is to manually restart it. When i do that though i see this scary blinking red light around my power button.

Anywho,

My PC:
WIndows 10 Home
version 1607
OS build 14393.0
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.71GHz
RAM 8GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64 based processor
ASUStek

I also installed speccy and all my temps are good except my motherboard which for some reason is 120 C when I FIRST TURN ON MY PC. ..What???

Heres what shows up with further inquiry:

Now i admit the motherboard temp is concerning, but doesn't freezing usually have something to do with RAM? Couldn't is just be a faulty sensor? It is my GPU? My power supply? My PC is only 2 1/2 years old so i don't see why i should be having these weird problems.
I've done all i can think of to cool down the Motherboard (if that is the problem) i've taken it off the floor, i've even put a fan on it! If my motherboard is so hot why isn't the rest of my PC?

And i also checked to see if it could possibly be the RAM slot thats faulty but nope, nothings changed even after i moved it to a different slot.

Anyway im confused, this is driving me crazy, and i could use all the help i can get.

Answer
120 °C is very high.

At 2.5 years it's always possible to see clogged cooling fins, failed fans and dried up heatsink compound.

Do you do your own work?

Lots of research

When i opened up my pc before i didn't see any dust bunnies or heatsink. The only fan on my PC is the processor. I also checked the rest of my pc for any dust but its pretty clean.

No, i don't do my own work, i've just had alot of time to research this.

How about the heatsink fan?

Is it spinning as new?

You also noted it's the only fan which is strange. Tell us how this PC came to be without a case or power supply fan. Maybe it's just something the builder forgot.

For now leave the case cover off since it's missing fans and re-test.

Fan looks good.

I cleaned out what little dust was in the PC and re-tested the temp without the case on it but the temps are still the same. I ran a game and my fan seems to be spinning fine to me.

This PC was bought off Amazon, so how it was built is unknown to me, maybe I'm just not seeing this second fan? Honestly afraid to doing any digging inside my PC seeing as how PC wiring is beyond my comprehension.

Side Note: I've factory restarted my PC twice so if there was any problem with programs or anything like that wouldn't it have been fixed?

Next stop. New heatsink compound.

Remember I take this is not a warranty situation and this never heated to 120C before.

So my next move would be to replace the heatsink compound. As there are plenty of Youtube and other tutorials on this, I'll pause here.

As to the missing case fans, you may have to install one. Strange build?
