The option key only gives you a choice of systems to start up from.
Start it in that fashion and then go to System Preferences and select that folder as the startup disk.
Try again.
Did it boot?
If no, start up using the Shift key and delete everything from the Startup Items folder. System Preferences/Accounts
Reboot normally

Hello,
10.3.9 on a Power G4.
The machine boots into 10.3 and stops at the white screen with the grey apple icon.
It will boot all the way if restarted with "OPTION" is held down and 10.3.9 is selected.
