General discussion

front projection ?

Jan 25, 2005 10:53PM PST

I am narrowing my choices which are Sony Cineza VLP HS-51 and the optoma H77. I live in a small community so I can not compare. Do you have any suggestions. Will this units compare to the rear projection DLP TV. The room is perfect for Projections since it only has one small window (14x22 room size).

If you would like some help please include the links to web sites for the projectors.
Yes with only one window it would be a good room for front projection. John

I am upgrading to it later this month. I currently have an Infocus ScreenPlay 4805. The nice features that VLP HS-51 is that its display is native 720p (no scaling necessary for 720p signals). It also has an amazing contrast ratio due to its use of a dynamic iris that restricts the light based on the scene. For anything related to front projection, go here:

http://www.projectorcentral.com/

They have tons of reviews & a huge database of projector information. As you can see from their charts, the hs51 is the best bang for your buck in its price range. It really took the spotlight at this years Consumer Electronics Show. Before this guy, LCD projectors in this price range couldn't compete with the contrast ratios of the DLP projectors. It not only competes, but beats them Happy

ps - if you are a techie, its also nice to know that the hs51 has a serial interface (rs232) & you can write a computer client program to communicate with it & control all its settings. Much like those touch panel displays that home-theater companies like to put in.

Hi c2bay!
You say you`re interested in the Sony Cineza and the Optoma, but have you checked out the InFocus ScreenPlay 5000? I don`t own this but I`m anxious to get to a store where they have it on demo and have a look. The price is way reasonable! With rebates it`s $999! I think front projection has a lot going for it. jcnetg
