Question

Front End Software For Reading Media on Router

Aug 30, 2016 6:40AM PDT

So, I want to connect a hard drive to my router via USB, and i'm aware i can remotely access this using the IP and port in the router settings using the "connect to a server" function in windows and mac - i'm just wondering if there's something similar to plex or media browser which would enable me to sort or organise the media in a nice way that i can display/access from my phone rather than the standard windows explorer/finder way. Thanks for your help in advance guys

Well i know it's two ends, but the media server side of it mustbe installed on a computer and it has to stay on for the other side of plex to stream. Can you install plex media server to a router and use a hard drive connected via usb to stream the content then?

Only if the router supports such.

https://www.google.com/search?q=plex+install+on+router finds no easy way. So my answer is no.

There are NAS's that run PLEX. But as you read https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201373793-Is-Plex-Media-Server-on-a-NAS-Right-for-Me- there are a lot of ins and outs.

This is why I bought an Intel NUC. It's very nice. Here's the one I used since I wanted low power. I added 8GB RAM and used SSD for low power and speed. Under 10 Watts most of the time.
