General discussion

from ipod to hard drive?

Jun 27, 2007 4:25PM PDT

Hello, I just broke my 320gb external hard drive...f@#$%^!
Anyway...the only stuff I had there that was not in my laptop is movies and tv shows.
But I do have them in my 80gb ipod.

So as you may already figured, my question is, can I transfer the stuff from my ipod back into my computer?how?

ps: just free software please.

No software needed. . .

Plug in the iPod and open iTunes. On the iPod settings, check "Enable disk use". Eject the iPod and reconnect it. It'll now show up in Explorer.

This is further explained at the iPod web site.

Disk enabled produces "coded" files
Jul 6, 2007 9:29AM PDT

I enabled disk use for my iPod, but when I went to explorer, I could indeed see that my files were there, BUT they were all coded. I have a lot of stuff on my iPod, music, photos, TV shows, and when I use Explorer to browse the iPod disk, the folders show up with these names 00 01 02 03 etc. And inside the files, when I open to see the actual music and video files, I can see them, but instead of seeing Barney and Friends (I have music on there for my kids) I see stuff like 25afl.m4v
I can tell from the icons that they are audio/video files, but I have no idea what I am looking at.
A friend loaded a bunch of songs onto my laptop. I enabled disk use for my iPod and was able to add the songs as a playlist to my iPod, now I want to go back to regular automatic sync with my main computer, but FIRST, I want to add the songs from my friend to my computer so the songs will not be deleted from my iPod.
It looks like I am going to need to use some kind of software, otherwise, I won't know what I am looking at.

If I had a .m4v file...

I would play it in iTunes or VLC Player to see what it was.

Sorry no.

It was cheaper than most software titles so I stopped looking when I found that.

Look up ipodlounge.com and see if they noted anything else.

How could you lose them?
Jul 6, 2007 9:41PM PDT

I've never lost a thing. I have my stuff on my PC and it syncs with the iPod. Even if the iPod went totally missing, I get a new one and it syncs back up.

I also backup my content and library on the PC but that never went away (yet.)

cause...

i have 100gb of storage in my laptop, and a 320gb external hard drive.
I have all my music in all 3 places (ipod too of course), but not my videos because I dont have enough room in my laptop.
My external hard drive broke down, so all my videos were only on my ipod, and when i got the new itunes version and sync my ipod, it got messed up and I had to restore it as it would not work at all.

In that case there was no backup. Didn't anapod work?
Jul 7, 2007 6:53AM PDT

I know it's not free but neither is all the video so per video it seems very cheap to me.

Sorry, what about that breakdown?
Jul 7, 2007 6:53AM PDT

Did you try the drive in a new USB drive case? I get about 1/2 back that way.

yes but...

I know anapod is probably worth it, but now it's gone.
I did not get a change as it happened when I first connected the ipod to my pc.
