? from a Wireless Newbie: Is a desktop PC w/ethernet...

Apr 26, 2005 4:20AM PDT

Is a desktop PC w/ethernet connection required in order to set up a wireless network? I only have 1 laptop PC and when looking at various instruction "manuals" they always seem to include a desktop PC connected to the wireless router with an ethernet cable. I have a DSL broadband connection via a combination wireless modem/router and a wireless card for my laptop. Do I require any other equipment in order to go wireless with just my laptop? Thanks in advance for your help.

No.

Just last month I helped a neighbor setup their wireless system. Advances in software helped immensely to not require us to "plug in" to the router to set it up.

YMMV,

Bob

If the circuit board as a wireless chip wired onto it you dont need anything. If not you have to bay a pci wireless card. It's best to have the same make as the router because encription and configuration can be much easier.

The packets would have to be compatible as well.

While Bob is right, remember he's got that "M" next to his name and knows what he's doing.

Speaking from my own experience, setting up the network wirelessly was almost automatic (xp laptop, D-link router), however, setting up the security was a nightmare because I was a real newbee and kept having issues with MAC numbers. I wouldn't have had those problems had I been connected with a cable.

After everything is working you should never have to hook up with a cable again.

Good Luck,
Eric
