Question

Fresh win7 install hard freezing [SSD]

Jul 18, 2017 1:20PM PDT

My specs:
OS:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

CPU:
AMD FX-9590

MEMORY:
32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (11-11-11-2Cool

MOBO:
CROSSHAIR V FORMULA-Z (Socket 942)

GPU:
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (EVGA)

STORAGE:
465GB Samsung SSD 850 EVO SDD

I also have a water cooling system to keep my CPU cool.
It usually runs around 30-40 C

----------------

Randomly my computer would freeze while playing games and running programs, so I thought for sure it was my old hard drive that I've had for 5 years. Today, I installed a fresh copy of windows 7 on my 500gb SSD and installed a few programs. Within 30 minutes, it hard froze again and I had to hard restart.

I've ran memtest64 and it showed no signs of ram failure or any issues. I'm really stuck on what is wrong and what I can do.

There's no BSOD dumps to look at either.

Any advice would be appreciated, I'm lost as what to do or order new parts for...

Answer
That CPU has some serious power demands.

"The CPU has some pretty serious power demands, so you'll want to make sure you pair it with a motherboard that offers both an AM3+ socket and can handle the chip's 220-watt power requirement."

I don't see your choice of PSU or how old the motherboard is but there are priors to this system and lockups. That is, I do not expect this configuration to be stable for years of use.

My PSU is Corsair HX1000i

and my mobo is crosshair v formula-z

Should be compatible right?

Compatbility is good.

But you along with thousands are reporting lockups. My comments are to share why I think it will lockup and that it goes with the bleeding edge TDP and age of the gear.

A little distilling of what I do to stabilize such a PC.

The shop will not accept such a machine for repair. Why? See my last google search.

But we can do things to help it get better. We try disabling half the CPU cores and check the heatsink work. Fans must be in top condition and we also can cut a huge hole in the side cover then cover it with screen to max out the airflow. Your newer techs might point out temp readings but they are just new to the game. Not all chips have temp sensors.

After this basic work we check the BIOS is current and defaults since any overclocking can be trouble. We may try eeking up a voltage a notch and reducting clock rates but the machine is known to lock up. So we do what we can to reduce the lockups. To cure, we replace the motherboard CPU and what else.
