Frequent momentary cursor freezes

Apr 4, 2004 5:10AM PDT

I have a 2-yr old Duron 800 Win98SE machine with 256RAM. Just recently I started to experience frequent 'momentary' (maybe 5 seconds) freezes of the cursor. These things happen like every couple of minutes. In the absence of these freezes, the computer otherwise works fine. I've tried re-booting, de-fragmenting, and have only 2 or 3 apps open at once. Even with 3 apps open, my system resources are still at 60-70%.

The only thing that has changed to the system in recent times is that about a month ago I switched monitors, but both are 17" SVGA.

Any help in solving this really annoying problem will be appreciated. Thanks.

One,

In addition to Kees' good suggestion, have you updated the "Display adapter/video driver" on your computer. You can normally find any driver updates at the computer manufacturer, or the video card manufacturer's website.

Also, even though you have fairly good resources, and because there may be conflicting programs still running in the background, have you gone into "msconfig" and UNCHECKED the unnecessary boxes to troubleshoot the program which is causing the "freeze"??. Antivirus and firewall programs can frequently be the culprit.

Hope this helps.

Just something on the basic side.

Have you tried reseating the mouse plug?

If it is a generic/2 button/10 buck mouse have you tried replacing the mouse?

I had some problems with my mouse and spent quite a bit of time trying to fix it by looking too deep.

A simple reseat of the plug and now the mouse is happy.
