I can't comment on the possibility of hard disk failure and will let others advise there.
However, if this problem is not related to the hard disk, it could simply be about corrupted files. This is a common problem with Explorer, (Windows Explorer, My Documents, Computer, etc), where the folders are viewed in a Icon or Thumbnail option and Explorer attempts to render either an image file or video file which is corrupted. Changing view to List or Details fixes the problem, but does not fix the corrupted file.
I can only suggest that as a possibility, and then leave it to you to investigate that further.
Good luck.

Hello,
I'm running a new built system with;
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.39ghz
4Gb
Windows 7 Ultimate, genuine
Samsung 1tb HDD
Recently my system has started randomly freezing, it varies when it does so- it could be watching a film, doing nothing, browsing etc, but i've noticed that it does tend to freeze more when I browse certain folders on my HDD. I've tested my hard drive and it has come up with all sorts of SMART, long and short DST fails. It is obviously still under warranty so will be replacing the drive and hoping this solves the problem.
Just wanted to check one thing. When it freezes, there are like graphics imprints left on the green, like purple and green, which have made me wonder if its a graphics issue? Or is it pretty definite that a broken hard drive with those fail signs make my desktop repeatedly freeze?
Many thanks
Josh
