freeze up

At least once a day my pc freezes up. This happens when I use the scroll bar and then it locks up.Then the only way to correct this is to press the reset button. I have done all the obvious, scan disk, defrag, virus scan, spyware removal. Any suggestions ? Win. 98/IE 6.0, AMD K-6.

For a K6? Could be age, dust, heat.

In reply to: freeze up

How long has it been since you dusted it out?

But before you do anything, is it all backed up? A machine of such age may decide to stop working if you dust it out, clean heatsinks and check the fans.

K6 what...233 to 550..

In reply to: freeze up

I've found the lower speed K6's more reliable. I've run into 5 K6-2 450-550 that started showing some glitches, scandisk errors, finally bugout. The 1st time, I let scandisk fix file errors and then had to fresh install. Install screwed up which proved to me it was the processor. RAM was OK because a new processor cured all....for about 9mos, then all over again. I detune K6 10% to 20% now, or if a soket 7, I put in a PI 200mhz and it runs strong.
Or the hangup is due to some malware that got cleaned and the results now mess with you.
Another time I ran into this, the video card ended up with a bad ram chip on it.

Why freeze up?

In reply to: freeze up

I suggest you to increase your ram to 512 Mb and try
a good pack (1) of memory like Kingston brand...all your problems will be resolved...I hope....
Good luck...

If its a K6 III (3) then these chips have been known to cause problems as they age. and some pretty werid problems at that
