Freeze frame

Jun 23, 2005 12:38AM PDT

Before memory cards one could capture a still photo (for 5 or 6 seconds) with continuing sound in the background to the tape. This made it possible to have a "slide show" on TV.

Does anyone know of recent, dual recording, videocams that have the capabilty of recording a still photo on the tape as well as capturing a (higher resolution) photo on a memory card?

No. Here's why.

MiniDV tape, it's format is a "standard" and such a feature isn't in that standard. Memory cards were a way to extend the feature set of camcorders.

I don't think so. My Elura (the first model) has a Photo mode that freezes the picture for 6 seconds on the tape. It has no memory card.

The freeze frame I saw was "not a picture."

But simple the same video frame for some number of frames.

That works but doesn't meet what you asked for in your first post.

Hope this clarifies that one for you.

You're right. But the context shows that repeating the same frame for 6 seconds was what I meant.
Do you know of any recent comcorders that do this?
I like to have a "slide show" when showing vacation video.

Try this google.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&biw=1024&q=camcorder+%22freeze+frame%22 finds some models with the freeze frame (not a still picture) feature.

In my definition, a "still picture" is from the camera feature that you see today. Freeze frame is not the still picture feature so it all depends on definition of the features.

-> It may not matter too much to camcorder makers about this feature and it may vanish as more people edit video on the Mac/PC machines since it could be "all too easy" to make this an effect in the video editing.

Thanks for the Google search term.

I knew I could grab a frame (if I have progressive scan) and then hold it for quite a while---much like creating a title. But I lose the background audio that way.

A "frozen" dancer with background music is an impressive shot. I can do that with my old Elura but not with the newer (and sharper) camcorders.

I think I'll let it drop. Thanks again.
