My laptop does not shut down. So I unplugged the mavhine and waited for the battery to die out. The light was sill on next day. There is no "hole" for resetting the machine (hard boot) and in spite of holding down the power button for a long time the machine does not shut down. The screen also does not light up. Can someone help?

but sometimes an assumption can be made.
Most probably you are running XP...
and the power management has been set up
so that you will need to shut down via
start menu ONLY. Open your power options
and look for the lid closer and hardware
power buttons as to how they are programmed
to work. On mine, pressing the power button
put the laptop in Suspend mode and does not
power OFF.
