General discussion

freelance....designer/client

Jul 17, 2007 3:24AM PDT

hey, I'm creating a site for a client as a freelancer and I dont work with any CMS, so I was wondering, what do I give the client after I'm done, apart from the site up and running?
The site wont need to be updated often or new pages added, it will pretty much be only updating a announcement box in the home page, which I will put instructions as a comment in the html on how to do it.

But I was thinking, I dont give them any .psd, .ai files right?

Should I advise them to keep a copy of the site as a back up like I do?

what should I keep? in case i want that site to be on my portfolio and i m not sure if they will keep it for a long time or whatever, should i keep a copy?

thanks.

Isn't this in the contract you made with them, or in your standard contract?

I should give them a full copy of the site contents on CD, because that's what they paid for. And probably you've got the right to keep a copy for your portfolio also.

Hope this helps.

I did not think of the cd idea...thanks.

Look into...

Instead of explaining HTML and all, look into a little CMS called Coranto. It's very easy to setup and allows your client to maintain some (any that you designate) text on their website with styles etc.

i'll look it up...and hope it's free...they know html, but if that is free it might work better.

Thank you.

Yes

It is free, and the nice thing about it... they basically login, see all the fields they can update, click on it, and add whatever they want... if they want a different size of text, or color, or bold/underline, they can just click a button as apposed to looking up what the HTML code is. Coranto is VERY easy to integrate into a website.

Also, if they have news on the website... they can keep adding new articles and you can set it to archive, and have a archive link on the page. Then people see like the first 3 headlines and can click archive to read older news. You can see an example of Coranto on my website. If you email me I can send you a link, and you can see how the archiving thing works and how well it integrates if you're interested.

Building a Web Site
Jul 17, 2007 10:16AM PDT

Okay..I have tried to design my own site with no success. I have inquired about having someone do it for me. The thing is I am not certain how to find a reputable person. I am new to my community, therefore, knowing someone is not an option.

Can you tell me what questions to ask....and what price is fair.

And also....not to be insulting, but how do you know once someone does this for you that they do not have access to go in to the site in the future and deplete funds?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

New to this site...I apologize if I did not post this in the right place.

Thanks so much!

mmm

yes it is the wrong place....you need to start a new thread or if mine had something to do with what you said it might have worked.

Just copy your post, create a new thread give it a title and post it.
I'll reply there.

if not it's ok.

I downloaded the 'stuff' for the cms...but I have no clue on how to install it...but i noticed it does come with good documentation so, i'll read it over the weekend and hopefully get started with it.
