Free Zone Alarm

Nov 3, 2005 9:28AM PST

Four of my neighbors have had connection problems. When they call the cable ISP Road Runner(Time Warner) they are told to disable Zone Alarm. Then they are able to connect to the internet. When they call Zone Alarm they are told there is a fee to fix the problem? What other free firewall can I recommend to them?

Have a look

at the following link: http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-7813-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=114259&messageID=1301091
a member came up with this list. Just to let you know, I have Zone Alarm and I have RoadRunner and I have not had any problems. I know this is a silly inquiry but, when you turn ZA on, the first thing that starts happening is it starts 'blocking' everything, if you where to hit 'deny' and remember this setting, I could see how you might not be able to get to a web site or the internet for that matter. If you think this is the least bit possible, you can always reinstall ZA and make sure that you tell it to 'allow' the connection. I have done a 'clean' install before and the first thing that comes up when I installed ZA was did I want to allow the internet connection.
Just a suggestion.

Zone Alarm
Nov 3, 2005 11:04AM PST

Eddie, you are probaly right. These are my friends but they are space cadets and could very well deny when firewall comes up the first time. However, the guy I helped today, I loaded the Zone Alarm some time ago and then trained it for him before I left by allowing not denying. His computer just started having problems connecting to the internet. I don't necessarily buy Road Runner blaming it on Zone Alarm. In fact I can't believe they tell someone to uninstall Zone Alarm and leave the computer unprotected on a cable hookup.
I personaly have a problem that started not to long ago. When I leave my computer for a couple of hours and come back, it won't connect to internet and I have to restart to correct the problem. I was thinking it might be a hibernation related problem.

It is Zone Alarm
Nov 4, 2005 7:12AM PST

For what it is worth, I uninstalled Zone Alarm and set up Windows XP Firewall and I no longer have the connection problem after I leave the computer for a couple of hours. Since connection problems have happened to four of us, I have to say it is Free Zone Alarm.

A wee bit of advice... 10/22/2005 00:19:00

Just a bit of advice for all the reviews commenting on how Zone Alarm is a pain in the *** for broadband connections. The reason you loose your connection is that ZA blocks access to your web proxy address so NO DNS. To get around it, find out your DNS server addresses from your ISP and add them to your NIC properties as static addresses. 10570

Possible Solution

I found in help that putting my IP number in the trusted zone of Zone Alarm would stop the losing of the connection. So far it has worked.
