Free Mem went from 30 gb to 4!!...any ideas why?

Hi all,
I am using Windows XP on a Lenovo Thinkpad with 120 GB of memory. I noticed a few months ago, while doing a Disk Cleanup, that my free space went from somewhere around 30+ to 4! I had done no major changes on the computer.
Now I am unable to run the defragmenter effectively, and have been unable to back up my computer b/c it says there is not enough free space. Someone suggested downloading spybot and running that, but there was no change.
Does anyone know of any reason why this would happen, and any possible solutions to fix it? Any help is appreciated! I just got this computer, didn't think I'd have to add memory to it so soon!
Thanks!

More information will be better. 'A few months ago, somewhere'? Just because you did a Disk Cleanup?
To solve the problem, you may try this: open C:\Documents and Settings\ 'User' \Local Settings\Temp. These files could be deleted. Then check whether there are many hidden files.

Hmmm...I don't know the exact date it happened, and I don't know the exact free space on the hard drive when it happened, just that it was somewhere around 30+ GB. Not sure what additional info you're referring to.

grape, open my computer, go to properties and run checkdisk. defrag will not work with errors on harddrive. The max memory you can have on IBM thinkpad would be 2gb ram

If everything is working ok, disable then re enable System Restore. This is a common space eater. Next go get CCLEANER to clean up other spaces.

Type SYSTEM RESTORE DISABLE in start, help. Also you can use google.com.

And it's CCLEANER which you can find with google.
