Personally, I would go:
Antivirus: Avast Home
Firewall: ZoneAlarm Basic
Antispyware: Windows Defender for real-time protection
Antispyware: Ewido (AVG Anti-Spyware) for system scans.
Hope this helps,
I know this has been answered a 1000 times, but I can't find exactly what I need.My sister just bought a new comp. She needs some FREE anti spyware, anti virus and anti spam downloads. Can a Mod. plz give me a small list of the above.Like I said,I've read it a bunch of times, but I have McAfee,so I didn't pay close attention enough to the FREE ones the Mods always give out.Could someone please point out the best free ones for me to pass along to her. Thanks in advance.chucker111.
Unfortunately, Avast's performance didn't match its appearance. It produced the worst performance scores among the ten products tested for "The New Virus Fighters." Avast performed poorly in heuristics tests, ranking third from the bottom. And its scan times were the slowest. On average it took more than 13 minutes and 11 seconds to perform a scan of our test PC.

I lean toward AVG free for AV, ZA free for firewall, and AdAware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Blaster for other nasties. Add to that the MS Windows Defender.

I like to see the actual numbers (number of infections, rates of detection, etc), so the German site AV-Comparatives.org is one of my usuals. In their system scan comparison Avast received Advanced certification, detecting 94.58% of all malware, while AVG received Standard certification, detecting 91.55% of all malware. Avast particularly excelled in script and DOS-based malware when compared to AVG. The proactive test set them further apart, with Avast catching 22% and AVG 7%.
AVG's good, but if I had to pick a freebie it would be Avast.
