free (audio) file conversion program recommendations?

Mar 20, 2010 12:27AM PDT

Hi there,

I was wondering if someone could recommend a free, simple, ?bug-free?, user-friendly file conversion program that I can download that will allow me to convert anything from .wav to .wma files into .mp3 format. I?ve been having huge problems with these ?free online file conversion websites? ? half the time they simply don?t work, give my computer a virus, or inundate me with spam and advertising.

Thanks very much,
rbracch

I continue to use AUDACITY but nothing today is worth buying in my view.

But a real problem is that today's owners will not dive in and try the command line tools. That's where the free stuff shines today. Since when is the command line not simple?

Audacity get it from their website, or at least read , read and read... it is free and better yet, it also has a portable version which I use, and about the best you can get, you can do about ANYTHING with it, my kids and I use for everything from conversions to recordings, converting cassette tapes, and chopping, speeding up slowing down, tempos, rates everything, we mostly use it for replaying a selected section of a song to learn on guitar.
You can do everything with it, (I know I said that already) but it's true.

For .wma you may need to have Version 1.3.6 or later AND the ffmpeg library. But the most popular version is 1.26 by far.

Although you might have a problem with .wma as that is a windows media audio file and most programs if I remember correctly are not allowed to allow you to convert them, or something like that.
