Question

FPS Drops, what is bottlenecking and what should I upgrade?

Apr 7, 2017 7:17PM PDT

Greetings, I'd like to ask what is the reason I'm dropping frames in next games: Rust, Ark Survival Evolved, Playersunknown's Battlegrounds.
Apparently something is bottlenecking and I cannot figure out what, in-game Riva shows that GPU multiple times went over 100% usage while the statistics show that CPU was the one going wild, I get a lot of frame drops and I want to get an improved part, but I do not know what part to get CPU or GPU, and I cannot determinate if something else is faulty on computer...
Win 10
i5 4460
GTX 750 Ti
PC Mate h97 MSI
(GPU I'd get: ASUS nVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Expedition OC 4GB GDDR5 128bit - EX-GTX1050TI-O4G)

Upgrade
Apr 7, 2017 10:10PM PDT

Ram, your running single channel and your a little short for gaming.
16GB seems to be the standard for gamers.
Shop for a 2x8GB kit @ 1600.
Make sure to fit it in the proper slots for dual channel.

Software, ASC seems to be frowned upon by folks on these boards.
I don't use any pc speeder-upper products so I have no stick time with ASC.
You might want to uninstall/turn it off, make sure windows defender goes active....test.

Ccleaner, looks like you have the paid version, if so that's another product that scans/monitors.......uninstall/turn it off....test

Wise care 365, same thing.

Custom Built PC
Apr 7, 2017 8:24PM PDT

tbh there is nothing which says the model, I bought a custom built rig.
As of the budget, for the GPU I woudn't give more than 250e...

The psu make and model should be on a label on the side of the psu.

will tell you that they prefer a single rail PSU , I do.!
Also as far as RAM goes , 2x 4GB @1600 will work , I would rather see 2x8 @ 1600 though .

That seems to be a dual rail unit with 20a on each rail.

The gtx 1050 should work.

If you want to go above that it would be best to change that psu.

GTX 1050 and upgrades
Apr 8, 2017 9:57AM PDT

So... As of what I summarized I for sure need new RAM 2x 8GB @1600Mhz
I'd like to get new GPU so I could remove a bit of stress from the CPU as CPU seems to keep up with these "newer" games... But mister @R.Proffitt said I won't get as much improvement towards what bothers me (The FPS drops and lag every once in a while in Rust, PUBG, Ark Survival Evolved) so is it viable to buy 1050 Ti? (ASUS nVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Expedition OC 4GB GDDR5 128bit - EX-GTX1050TI-O4G) as I cannot afford to buy new PC... And what did you mean under 'go above' ? And is my PSU faulty? Thanks and kind regards,
Nikola

Gtx 1050
Apr 8, 2017 10:54AM PDT

Will be better than what you have.

Go above means a gtx 1060/70/80.

Psu, your unit is a split 12v rail, it would be easy to overload one of those rails if you fit in a high power gpu.

Faulty no, it's just not meant for high power devices.

Fps, yes you will still see fps bouncing around you just won't see as much.

I'm still learning to read Speccy's but
Apr 7, 2017 8:59PM PDT

1. 8.00GB Single-Channel is a no-no , get another 8 GB RAM of exactly the same make to run Dual Channel
2. I think you should put in faster RAM . You should be running DDR3-1600 Memory
3. And this is a biggie too, Get rid of all Iobit products including Advanced SystemCare Service 10

I'm sure the pro's are going to find more

Sir could it be that they've put a HyperX Fury mask over on 800mhz RAM stick? Because inside the rig I got a HyperX Fury 1866 RAM, how do I unlock it's full potential?

khx1866c10d3/8g Kingston
This is the RAM I'm using, why it only uses 800Mhz when it can go up to 1866Mhz (Motherboard doesn't go above 1600 tho, but it still only uses 800Mhz)
And is it viable to buy 2x 4GB @1600 ?

Double data rate.

800 doubled equals 1600.

In order for you to use the ram at 1866 requires overclocking.....don't do that.

Leave everything at native speed.

Fix that RAM
Apr 8, 2017 9:35AM PDT

And you WILL get frame rate drops on a 1050 at 1080p game play. There is nothing wrong here. You can improve this by dropping graphic settings but anyone that things FPS drops are wrong on a 1050 just hasn't been around long enough.

I can get frame rate drops on a 1080 video card. This is the nature of gaming today.

Apr 8, 2017 9:51AM PDT

that Iobit products are bad news also.
Would that slow down gaming though ?

Haven't read the entire report.
Apr 8, 2017 9:55AM PDT

Will comment on a new reply but FIRST things FIRST. The 1050 is a nice card but it will slow down in complex scenes.

There's a new thing called dynamic shadows which I hope more games enable in more ways. That is, it drops graphic features as the frame rate drops. This way when the FPS drops to say 30, it flips dynamic shadows off to keep from degrading further.

Is there anything I can do to slightly improve what I currently got? I posted the model of a card I'd like to get... Kind regards,

Fixing the RAM!
Apr 8, 2017 10:02AM PDT

I will for sure get 2x8GB @1600Mhz
But will 1050 TI (ASUS nVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Expedition OC 4GB GDDR5 128bit - EX-GTX1050TI-O4G) be a waste? I'd really like to get an upgrade to what I currently got. I do know that those games are poorly optimized but I really do drop frames in PUBG, which by the system requirments I should run with ease, but optimization isn't as good for now I guess...

I really enjoy keeping my computer clean and always at good health.
Good tips should be for everyone to follow!
About _JAVA_OPTIONS: Xmx256M, how do I fix this? I googled stuff but no one actually explained how to fix this issue, will it be fixed if I uninstall Java?

- Collapse -
Uninstalling Java is best.
Apr 8, 2017 10:51AM PDT

I can't know why it's installed. But if you don't know, just uninstall since it continues to be something that needs constant updates and I won't even begin the security debate.

We are looking to squeeze the last frame here. Even the little update app that runs takes up a little time slot so less is more here.

Speccy reading. What I would do if mine.

Be sure to get item 10 taken care of.

1. Single channel ram. Fix that.
As to 800 or other speed, do not get hung up there. There are long discussions about memory speeds, yours is fine but single channel means some performance left untapped (about 10%).

2,. Java. Uninstall if you don't use it.

3. TEMP? Odd entries there.
"TEMP: D:\TEMP - Ne DIRAJ
TMP: D:\TEMP - Ne DIRAJ"

DO NOT PUT SPACES or other than alphanumerics into TEMP folder names. Not going to vet this here.

4. _JAVA_OPTIONS: Xmx256M
That's one odd entry. I find that when I use Java I let it max out. Limiting this could cause weird Java issues. But your choice on this one.

5. A second set of TEMP variables?
TEMP: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
TMP: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

My bet is you wanted these to really point to D:

6. IOBIT.
Never let this stuff on your PC. I don't.

7. BIOS is CURRENT (Good to see that!)

8. Web cam. Unplug for now. Can cause some load that you need to do without.

9. DNS Server: Good choices. Good to see that.

10. TURN THIS OFF. Read link how.
https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

All in all pretty nice and not much beyond the usual. Good to see DNS and BIOS already taken care of.
