forwarding Emails

Nov 28, 2004 10:40AM PST

I sometimes receive emails with special pictures in them. I would really like to forward them to some friends, but when I do, all they receive are the written words. The graphics are just box outlines with a red x in the upper left hand corner. I imagine it is something simple to correct this, but I have no idea what to do. Would really like your help.

A good start would be supplying your OS (operating system) and the e-mail program that you use.

Domo,

MOre info is definitely needed, but....

In your last posts, you mentioned that you are using Windows 98. Assuming you are still using Win98 and you are using Outlook Express to send your mail, you'll need to make sure that the settings are correct to send the pictures. Try this:

Open Outlook Express, then click on "Tools" in the upper left. Select "Options" from that menu and then click on the "Send" tab. When that opens, in the "Sending" section, make sure there is a CHECK mark in the in the "Include Message In Reply" selection. Next, in the lower part of the same window, in the "Mail Sending Format" section, place a dot/tick in the "HTML" selection. Now click on the "HTML settings" button and make sure there is a CHECK mark in the "Send Pictures with Messages" option. Click on OK, then "Apply", then OK, etc.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Grif, I followed your suggestions and found that there was no check mark in the send picture box. I did as you suggested and I am in business!! Hooray!! Remember the shortcut problem I was having? The very same thing is happening with trying to get to THIS website. I click on the shortcut on my desktop and it flickers and immediately closes. The same thing happens in My Favorites. The shortcut on my desktop does put an icon at the bottom of the page, but clicking on it just makes it disappear. I am using Windows 98. Hope you have a suggestion for this problem too. I had to find you by going to an old list of websites that I like (hand written stuff).

Domo, Here's Another Option
Dec 1, 2004 11:52PM PST

Personally, I prefer saving websites in my "Favorites" section. (I don't like a lot of desktop icons. In Internet Explorer, after I open a website that I visit frequently, I click on "Favorites" in the upper left corner, choose "Add to Favorites". When the next window opens, I make sure the name of the favorite is something I'll remember, then I click on OK. From now on, after opening Internet Explorer, I can click on the "Favorites" button, select the site I've saved and it will immediately go there.

Apparently, you're making the shortcuts incorrectly. This is how I create a shortcut to a webpage on the desktop using Internet Explorer 6: Open Internet Explorer, then go the webpage that you want to save. Once there, click on "File" in the upper left, choose "Send", then select "Shortcut to Desktop". The icon on your desktop should look like a blue "e" on a single piece of paper.

Hope this helps.

Thank you again! I will follow that procedure next time I make a shortcut. However, the "flickering shortcuts" have been in use for a couple of years. Suddenly they won't work. Also, my file in Favorites that I call "Computer Stuff", again an old one, suddenly will not open. Just flickers and then closes.

Domo, Which Version Of Internet Explorer...????
Dec 2, 2004 4:59AM PST

....are you using? It sounds like Internet Explorer is having problems. Remembering that you're using Windows 98, then you may not have Internet Explorer 6 installed yet. If that's the case, then it should help to download and install it from the link below:

Internet Explorer 6 SP1 Download Site

If you already have Internet Explorer 6 SP1 installed, or if you want to keep your older version, then you should be able to "repair" it by opening the Control Panel, double click on "Add/Remove Programs" icon, highlight the "Internet Explorer and Internet Tools" listing, then click on the "Add/Remove" button. A small window will load, giving you multiple options. Select the "Repair" option and follow the prompts to repair IE.

Another option would be to download and install a secondar browser. There are number out there, but the one at the link below works fine for me:

Firefox Browser Download Site

HOpe this helps.

I am using Internet Explorer 6. Will follow your repair instructions and see what happens. How would Internet Explorer affect my folder in Favorites? My Computer Stuff folder will not open either.

Grif, I reached the Add/Remove screen and highlighted Internet Explorer Q834707 and clicked on Add/Remove. The next screen says "This program uninstalls Q834707 and restores your previous configuration. Do you want to uninstall Q834707? There was no mention of repairing.
Also I followed the directions for shortcuts but it did not put the Newbies Forum on the desktop.

Domo, Once AGAIN, Which Version Of Internet Explorer...????
Dec 3, 2004 7:20AM PST

First, tried to remove the wrong thing in "Add/Remove". In "Add/Remove Programs" there should be a listing for "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5/6 and Internet Tools". That's the item that will allow for a "repair". Here's a link that should help. If you happen to have Internet Explorer 5, let us know because you should probably install IE 6 SP1 from the link I provided earlier:

How to Repair Internet Explorer 6 Using the Repair Tool

We need the Internet Explorer information. Open Internet Explorer, then click on "Help" in the upper left, choose "About Internet Explorer". Give us the "Version" number.

Hope this helps.

domogirl, Your Favorites Shortcut problem is the result of your .LNK files association problem. To correct this go to the link below and scroll down to "FixLink.reg". If you have a zip program installed on your computer just click on the underscored "FixLink.reg" and download the "fixlnk.zip" file to your hard drive. Unzip it then double click the .reg file and merge it into your registry. If you don't have a zip program follow the instructions exactly to create the .reg file and copy and paste it into Notepad and save it as fixlnk.reg. After you have done this just double click that file and merge it into your registry. It is good practice to backup your registry prior to doing the above.

I do have Winzip and I'm pretty sure I understand what to do until I got to the part where you said to merge it into my registry. I don't know where or what the registry is nor do I know how to get to it. As for backing it up, do I put a CD into the slot? Then what?

domogirl, The first thing you want to do is to backup your registry. You don't need your CD. Follow the instructions at the link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256419/EN-US/

After you have done the registry backup successfully download that file I posted in my previous response the unzip it with your WinZip program and either double click the .reg file to merge it into your registry or right click the .reg file and choose "Merge". This will merge the content of that .reg file into your registry and hopefully will correct the problem.

Hope This helps,

Followed your directions and backed my registry, merged the FixLink.reg into the registry. The computer stuff folder in My Favorites still will not open and the Flashquote icon on the desktop only flashes and the computer stuff icon on the desktop will not work.
When I boot up my computer, the following message appears. "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Window Application. The Windows registry or System.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program. If you sstill want to use the application associated with the device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
Does this have anything to do with the problem?

A. Remember the shortcut problem I was having? The very same thing is happening with trying to get to THIS website. I click on the shortcut on my desktop and it flickers and immediately closes. B. The computer stuff folder in My Favorites still will not open and the Flashquote icon on the desktop only flashes and the computer stuff icon on the desktop will not work.

1. Does the last sentence of your statement mean that if you opened IE somehow, then type the URL for this site from your notes, that it then worked?

2. I don't understand. How was IE started in this case?

C. "Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Window Application. The Windows registry or System.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program. If you still want to use the application associated with the device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

a. Was there no indication whatsoever of the file name?

b. Cannot Find a Device File That May Be Needed to Run
[Q132008], and [Q166832]

1. When you receive an error message as outlined in the two above references, you may not be sure which program the file is associated with in the referenced error, [Q304590]:

? attempt to identify the name of the file or files from the error message

? if the error message indicates that an unknown file is missing or damaged and causing an error message, use the Clean-Boot Troubleshooter to determine from where the file is loaded and what the file name is, [Q192926] - Win98, {Q243039] - Win95, or [Q267288] - WinME. Otherwise, keep reading if you have the file name.

2. Search the "Microsoft library" by entering the search parameter cannot find a device file that may be needed or the filename itself in the box labeled, This exact phrase:, and then press Enter. It may be to your advantage to indicate the OS on the top line.

Note: Clicking this link opens the linked-site in a separate window for your convenience, and once open, any item of interest should be opened in a separate window for viewing/reading. After finishing, simply close that window and you'll pop right back to the main list which requires no refresh -- regenerating a window, which has been written over and progressed back to, can be time consuming as you may well know.

3. Download and use "IEFix" - a general purpose fix for Internet Explorer (Win 98/ME/2000/XP):

a. Registers Urlmon.dll, Mshtml.dll, Actxprxy.dll, Oleaut32.dll, Shell32.dll, Shdocvw.dll, [Q281679].

b. Refreshes Internet Explorer using IE.INF method. Note:

? "Unable to Install Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP (Q304872)"

? "How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP (Q31837Cool"

c. Initiates "SFC /Scannow" (Win2K&XP), [Q310747].

I'm sorry if I sounded snippy. I'm having troubles navigating around your website and I was not aware of the rules. You respondedd so quickly before, that I thought you were through with my inane questions.
It is not IE that won't start, it is a shortcut on the desktop that was supposed to bring up cnet.com computer newbies forum. I found a reference to Cnet.com, typed it in and got to the home page, scrolled down and found Cnet forums to computer newbies. Made a shortcut of that and the new one works now.
There are some letters below that error message. I did not realize that they were part of the message. They are brmemory.vxd
I have printed out your page and I will try to follow your directions. I feel like I'm getting in over my head since I don't understand what I'm doing. If so, is it time to hire someone locally or do you think I can handle it without making a complete mess of things.

Just hang in.

An easy way to get quick access to ANY site you want to get back to is to click "favourites" and then add your current page.

You can always delete it later, if you want to.

Hope this helps.

domogirl, The "brmemory.vxd" file is associated with a "Brother Stylus Multi-Function Printer" driver. Do you or did you at one time have such a printer installed on this computer? When does the error message referncing "brmemory.vxd" appear?

We recently bought a Brother Printer,Fax,Scanner machine. I put the CD that comes with it and started the installation directions. My husband was having trouble getting everything set up, so I stopped the CD. I guess that created the problem. Right? The message appears each time I boot up the computer. How do I get rid of that message and start all over? The icon does appear on the Printer settings page.

You'll most likely find the "brmemory.vxd" file resident in the "Windows\System\Vmm32" folder which is the usually location where Windows adds files with this extension. If you find it there, you may either move it somewhere else or simply rename it by removing the last character of the filename.

Otherwise, follow the excellent suggestion in Tufenuf | 12/10/04 12:58 PM.

Yes, that's most likely the reason you're getting that error message because when you stopped the CD not all the drivers/driver files were installed. The best advice I can give you is to read the instructions that came with the Brother Printer,Fax,Scanner Printer and start from scratch. I'd look in your Add/Remove Programs and see if there are any references to the Brother Printer. If there are uninstall the Brother refernces. I'm not on a Windows 98 machine but maybe someone else could suggest whether or not to go into Device Manager and remove any drivers for that printer. Does the printer work (all features)and do you know the Model Number of it? Your manual should tell you how to remove the printer and start from scratch.

same problem

Exact same problem. Sometimes something says, when I do properties, hypertext protocal. Sometimes it seems to be other types of graphic problems, and sometimes I change security settings, which I set on low today, but the problem persists. It's mostly smileys and cartoon jokes, and usually when I forward. Now, when I review things I've sent, I can't see anything but the red x also.
