General discussion

Forums are still a bit flakey

Feb 15, 2006 10:02AM PST

I just posted a response to rosscbrown's post titled "I Live c|net" and it shows that there are 5 messages in the thread but then when I check it to see if it posted properly, it only shows three.

I know for a minute I saw it on there and now it's not showing up even though it still lists 5.

So whatever they did to the server today is either still being worked on or it's now a little flakey.

I'm a new person!
Feb 15, 2006 10:19AM PST

Whenever I read a message that someone has posted, on the left is says "Welcome, username" and the username is the person who posted that message.

Here's another one for you... even though I'm logged in (and do everyday), it says that my last login date was sometime in December 2005... not sure what that's about.

No More Mark All Read
Feb 15, 2006 5:24PM PST

During the upgrade we also seem to have lost a feature that I use every time I come here. At the top of the forum page there used to be a link for MARK ALL POSTS AS READ (or something like that). Given how are this forum is to use as it is, this was about the only way I could tell when I cam back what things were really new.

Now everything is unread and I would have to read each post in every thread to fix it. Ick, ick, ick, ick, ick.

Is it too late to just go back to the old software?

And Another Thing
Feb 15, 2006 5:27PM PST

When I just tried to post the last message the first time it split it back saying "please include subject." Well, I had, but of course right below the message was an EMPTY subject *and* message line. I hit the back button and resubmitted and it worked. Hopefully this post will work first try.

I'm on Firefox 1.5.01 on Macintosh OSX 10.4.5.

And Now It Works
Feb 15, 2006 5:28PM PST

And now for some reason now that I've posted a message the icons are back to the way they used to be and the mark all discussions read button is back.

Stranger and stranger...

And Now It Doesn't Again
Feb 15, 2006 8:36PM PST

You know, it's almost like the system can't decide if I'm logged in or not. I just came back and once again the icons for the threads are different (yellow arrow instead of yellow circle with arrow), everything is showing as new, and I once again don't have any way to mark all discussions as read. I even tried logging out and back in. It didn't help.

<sigh>

And Now It Does
Feb 15, 2006 8:38PM PST

OK, it looks like I have to post something before the system understands that I'm actually me and that I'm logged in. I guess I'll just post to this thread every time I come visit so that I can tell what I've read already...

I guess if someone gets a t-shirts for the most posts it might be me, since I'll end up posting here 10 times a day just to get the forum to display right. Wink

I've been having that same problem too
Feb 15, 2006 10:24PM PST

I had thought maybe it was just me that was experience the flakiness of the forums. I too am back to everything being unread.

Better

The message marking seems to be better.

I'm kind of a slow reader, so I haven't noticed any speed issue. Wink

Worse than ever
Feb 16, 2006 2:18AM PST

I'm constantly getting this error today:

"We're sorry, but the page you requested could not be found."

This appears usually when i just try to go straight to the home page for the forum but sometimes as I preview a post or hit submit.

Whatever was done to the forum code yesterday has seriously messed things up, at least for a Safari user (don't know if it could be browser specific).
