Forums are back in action! Redesigned CNET is launched!

Mar 23, 2014 7:13AM PDT

Hi everyone,

The Forums are now back in action. We have lifted the Read Only mode as CNET newly redesigned site has launched. Please have a look around http://cnet.com . Note that while you are surfing around the new site, you may occasionally run into an old CNET page as we are currently still redirect CNET pages to the new pages.

The CNET forums functionality and design has not changed (except for the top navigation) which was done to match the rest of CNET's pages. The redesign of the forums is slated for a future date.

In the forums, you may notice that some of the link colors in the forums have changed (ie some links are red and on hover will turn orange). These cosmetic changes aren't intentional and doesn't affect forum functionality. The link color changes were caused by the clashing styles of our older forum code and the new CNET site's code.

I'm looking into getting these fixed, but I can't promise you a fast turn around as there a lot of items that we have to address with our new site first before we can take on some of these minor cosmetic issues. If the colors bother you, we apologize for the disruption.

I hope you all enjoy the new CNET.com site. If you see anything broken on our site or you just love the new design or even dislike it, we'd love to hear about it. Please submit your feedback for the new CNET here:

Thanks everyone!!

-Lee

Mar 23, 2014 7:46AM PDT

Mark B locked the post you made so I'll do it here. I found myself subscribed to two features I'd never (or don't recall subscribing to and never before got notifications about. These were "Cnet Insider" and "Cnet Howto". I unsubscribed and got an email notification from each acknowledging my action. I also got a tracked discussion notification from some SE topic back in Oct. 2013. I don't tract discussions at all. Here's the text of the message.

Hello (email address removed by me)

Discussions you are tracking in the CNET Forums have been updated.

I've gotten nothing since so maybe just a quick flurry that's ended. Thanks.

Thank for that information Steven...

That is odd that you all of sudden received a Forum tracked discussion alert since those are so old and nothing has been updated. What is the date sent on that Tracked discussion email? Can you double check, I just want to make sure you received that today.

Thanks Steven!

The date shown in my T-bird mail
Mar 23, 2014 6:49PM PDT

is 3/23/2014 at 5:01PM. I'm in the eastern time zone. The newsletter subscription notifications were 3 minutes earlier. These all came within a short time of my noticing that I was subscribed and unsubscribing. Something must have triggered the tracking notification. I'm sure that, in the past, I've accidentally hit the wrong button when posting so could have inflicted this upon myself. It's just odd that I'd not gotten anything earlier. No big deal. Nothing else has happened since then. Tks

Thanks for that info Steven!

I believe something must have triggered the Tracked forum email notification when you unsubscribed to those two CNET newsletters. On couple of my accounts I tried the same steps you took and wasn't able to reproduce what you are seeing, which makes me think it was it was a quirky one time, one off type of snafu or you're just lucky and should be playing the lottery Happy.

Anyways if you see anything odd or unusual in your alerts, please let me know.

I appreciate you reporting and taking the time out to explain all of it.

And I do apologize for the confusion.

Have a great day!

Didn't mean to just gripe
Mar 24, 2014 3:34AM PDT

I do find the layout to be quite a bit nicer and easier to navigate. I'm sure there's more to be explored as you folks have been gone quite a lot lately. No one just napping, I suspect, and probably not much hair left on anyone. <grin>

No worries Steven...
Mar 25, 2014 2:00AM PDT

I didn't take it as a gripe, rather that I was concerned it was a bad bug...

I'm glad to hear you like the new site design... our team did a lot of work not only on the front end but the entire back end as well.

After this project, we all have more gray hairs and a lot less hair. Happy

Thanks again for you help on this.

Cheers,

I don't mind so much the red link and on hover turns orange as this is what our the CNET's site does for all hyperlinks, but the one that bothers me, is the visited links that turn from blue to red, which is a bit strange and can be confusing as Kees pointed out in the other thread.

Thanks Digger for the feedback!

a few miles away from Trenton, Fl. I was across the line from Gilchrist county, in Alachua. Oddly enough the local jr-sr high school had the confederate battle flag for mascot and the sports team were the Rebels, colors were red and grey. Later due to integration it was changed to red white and I think grey also remained, the name changed to Raiders, I suspect the flag might have been retired.

Why cant I post comments? I use firefox, Windows 8.1 Even when I look at reviews, news, ect.. The comments are not showing that you wont able to read and post comments!

Do you have any Firefox extentions or add ons that you think might be preventing you from seeing comments?

In the past were you able to see comments before the new CNET redesign? Or you've never been able to see it?

Can you see comments using another browser like Internet Explorer or Chrome?

Any details would help us investigate the problem you are experiencing.

Thanks for your help!

Posting Comments Issue
Mar 31, 2014 7:24AM PDT

Internet Explorer I can see comments and you can post comments on your new website! I use Firefox as my main browser. Even your old site before redesign I can see and post comments!
The extensions I got on Firefox is- Ad blocker, Avast Online Security, Do not track me and Mask me, Facebook timeline remover and Yahoo tool bar. I haven't got any FF add ons, Could it be possible your new comment feature not work with FF but only works with other browsers?? With Disqus other sites uses I have no problem seeing comments and posting using different browsers, I dont know what server you use that powers comments that you use other than Disqus. Let me know on the situation. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback...
Apr 1, 2014 1:48AM PDT

We use Livefyre for our commenting system. We didn't change our commenting platform when we went to our new site design. I'm using FF as my main browser as well and comments has continue to work for me, so my guess is that there is something with one of your browser extensions that causing this behavior--which may need some massaging to get comments to show up. Can you try turning some of the extensions off to find out which might be the culprit? I apologize for the troubles.

Thanks,

BTW one of our moderators mentioned...

that she had experienced the same with comments not appearing and she said she had to have NoScript allow "googletagservices". Maybe give this a try?

Found It!
Apr 1, 2014 8:11AM PDT

It was Avast online security was the Culprit! I disable one by one ad ons until I found out it was Avast. Is it possible if that bug could be fixed I dont want to leave my online security off. Thanks

Avast.
Apr 1, 2014 8:31AM PDT

Maybe better to ask in their forums on this. If it's Avast free why not try AVG or something else.

Dafydd.

Hmmm Avast of all things?
Apr 1, 2014 10:16AM PDT

Are you sure? That is strange. I'm wondering if there is some super secure setting in Avast that is a bit over the top that is disallowing it to be displayed. But if you say comments can be seen using IE then why isn't Avast blocking it in that browser? Also if you had Avast prior our site redesign launch, then comments shouldn't have been displaying on our old site for you either.

Not sure what to make of this.

- Collapse -
Very positive!
Apr 1, 2014 4:05PM PDT

It was Avast online security. Do not track me/ Mask me and Ad Blocker wasn't the culprit. Since I disable ad-ons one by one! I bought a new laptop last dec Install top free anti virus and others from your site. When I had Avast I can still see and post comments before your redesign, Since you had new design on your website, Thats the problem began I could not see and post comments! I don't know why I can see and post comments on IE but with firefox, since you use Livefyre so it has to be a problem with Avast, Firefox and Livefyre, Probaby who did your new website need to chat with Avast, firefox and Livefyre to see if people had same problem as I had so they can work out the bugs!

- Collapse -
Thanks for the information and confirming.
Apr 2, 2014 1:53AM PDT

I'm going to have check at home as I have Avast running on my home desktop as well to see if this occurs in FireFox.

I'll update with my results.

Thanks again for your help!
