Forum software/server query

Jul 25, 2004 11:02PM PDT

Is there some reason that the "tracking images" -- the vertical lines connecting threads to allow you to determine who the reply is too -- are apparently on a different server? If I use Mozilla and check the "accept images that come from originating server only" option for images, then the lines are not displayed. It seems rather strange to me that these images are on another server -- then again, considering that ad servers try to set cookies when I do display them ...

In addition, using Firefox, the "Previous Message" link above the text of the post also goes missing...

A guess. . . .
Jul 26, 2004 12:17AM PDT

CNET seems to be structured so that posts can be linked to product reviews and the other sections of the CNET services that do not cater to forums. The messages are probably stored due to the numeric tree coding, making them all in one location. The changes and additions cuased by JIVE and the modifications Lee has managed to obtain are probably enforced on another system that is not affecting the non-forum sections of CNET.

Don't feel bad, on a Mac iBook, half the options are gone, period. It's like DOS for forums LOL!

That must be a real PITA. I found this out quite by chance playing around with Mozilla. Initially I couldn't figure out what the difference was but it quickly became evident in a long thread that I couldn't follow the lines. It's too bad we also couldn't still have the "this is a reply to" feature.

Continuing wish list

It would also be nice to have an option to go to the top of the forum you're in once you post, rather than back to the discussion you just posted in. But hey, at least the messages load, don't duplicate themselves, and the slowdowns seem over with.

I wonder if they scraped that off the old forums to use on this one?

The call to that server ...
Jul 26, 2004 12:43AM PDT

... dw.com.com is nothing new, I've seen it flash in the status bar all along since the switchover. Given the associated cookies it seemed this was one way CNet was getting ad revenues (? -- seems we are told they aren't right now but how else to explain the attempts by advertisers to set cookies?). I just find it odd that forum navigation features would be routed in this manner. Maybe to have us keep the tracking by keeping our images on to be able to manage the forums?

Oh, okay. . .now this makes more sense! if you have the images already saved that show which advertisers have shown their banner to you within a set amount of time, that is an indication to show a different banner. I am now on SunMicro and EBay in the display on this page. It will likely change on a reload.

Yep. Hit Preview and it changed to Vonage - whatever that is. And this page is now Tripod. It must track times between displays as well as interest in clicking on displays, if any. At least that is the "normal" method. I'lve got an older article on how CNET uses the cookies to track things, but I'll have to find that link later. Work day.
