Question

Fortnite FPS drop-problem, i really need help

Apr 20, 2018 4:51PM PDT

Here is a video of my problem, pay attention to the FPS-counter. Mute the sound, it sounds like a vacuum-cleaner is inside your ears.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTh9LkinAQk&feature=youtu.be

So in the last few days i have started to get FPS-drops, i have everything turned on lowest possible setting, i have all performance-enhancing setting turned on on my PC and i have all the latest drivers for Nvidia. I have played this game since November last year and have never had problems like this before now. The only drops i have had has been while looking over tilted towers or in crowded areas in squads. Is it normal to go from stable 240fps capped to 70-80-90 for 2 seconds then back up to 240fps again?

Specs: Intel Core i7 3820(multiplier on x43) - Geforce GTX 760(overclocked with MSI Afterburner, +80 clock and memory +250) 8GB RAM. Not the best cooling in the world but i have monitored temp on all hardware and i see no problems there.

Speccy reading.

1. SSD Attribute name: Read Error Rate
Something is up with the SSD. I also see a lot of unexpected power outages.

This doesn't mean the SSD is truly in trouble given the mix of SMART VALUES (see google) but could be you are randomly losing power. This could be an overtaxed PSU or something else.

Let's hear more story here and the name (make) and model number of the PSU.

2. There are a few more than I like to see IP connections. Please turn the following off.
Why? Why share your internet and wear out your SSD?
Read https://www.howtogeek.com/224981/how-to-stop-windows-10-from-uploading-updates-to-other-pcs-over-the-internet/

3. The GPU is at 60C without a game running. That seems to be on the high side.
Yes, it's an older GPU but are you up to date with the canned air to the fans and heatsinks on the GPU and the rest of the PC?

4. 144Hz. On an older GPU is asking for troubles. Anyhow since the GPU is already warm I wonder if it's going ballistic on games.

FINALLY https://youtu.be/GBkGu4Wd7vg?t=270 gets into how older GPUs don't get optimizations for new games. Some never get and it can show up as initial good FPS and then it's a dog.
Also, if you run W10, NEVER EVER let Microsoft pick your GPU driver. Turn off driver updating and pick the driver that works for your setup. And then don't change it forever. (well, until you have to.)

PS. Another few areas.

I see that Razer power plan. I worry about 2 things here.
1. What is the Razer power plan? (only you know)
2. I can tank performance by pushing up the mouse/keyboard polling rate. (Hint: never do this.)

?

Are you saying that i should lower the polling rate on my mouse? Does that affect anything?

An update for you
Apr 21, 2018 11:31AM PDT

Corsair CX600M, 600W is the name of my PSU.

I read about SMART VALUES, i really am not smart enough to understand it in a quick reading and not in my own language. But is there any way to remove these power outages?

I am not the smartest when it comes to PC hardware so i dont understand everything you guys are saying, i am sorry! I would love to buy better hardware but as you know it does cost a lot so im limited. As i said earlier, i have MSI Afterburner running so i think the temp is higher because of that.

Should i go down in monitor hz? Have never had any trouble before and i have used 144hz for years with this gpu.

About the IP connections, what is this? I dont really understand it, are there more computers connected or what?

The PSU looks fine.

About the smart values. The drive is reporting problems and my take is this could be a source of trouble along with the older GPU.

The GPU temp is TOO HIGH for no game running. It's already to the point where just a bit more and it should throttle and cause more delays.

No to the monitor Hz. Why? It worked before so you need to find your way back to when it worked.

As to the IP connections I shared what to turn off. If you don't then your choice.
Unless you make changes I don't expect this to get better.

Thank you

I turned off the IP connections. About the high temp on GPU i dont know what to do, i have cleaned it with air and i did it just some weeks back. It wount go under 60 celsius.

That's progress.
Apr 21, 2018 11:50AM PDT

The high GPU temp at essentially idle is still concerning. Is there any sign of a rogue BIT COIN MINER on the system? It's one of these new plagues.

Grif has a set to scanners I use at http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/how-to-remove-pup-option-603542/#post-f742c795-5881-433b-a29b-6d758efe5cd3

But this still leaves us with a suspect SSD so check with it's maker for a health test app.
Also, the cleaning was done so take a look at the fans on the GPU. I come across dead ones all the time.

Finally if you fell for the "upgrade your GPU driver trap" as I noted above you could have found a performance issue there. Go back to your driver version when all was well.

And then the last area is games today just are awful on old GPUs. I explained why above.

Driver updates
Apr 21, 2018 11:59AM PDT

I use Geforce Experience, thats where i update, i should not do this?

I shared why we don't above.
Apr 21, 2018 12:08PM PDT

Try the old version where it worked.

If it never worked right on this new game you have fallen into that other issue I noted above.

- Collapse -
It worked
Apr 21, 2018 12:13PM PDT

It did work on this game earlier and also on this perticular driver-update also which is the weird thing. This problem just came all of the sudden. I noticed when i exited the epic game launcher that the temp of the GPU dropped down to 45 celcius while idle.

- Collapse -
There are signs of problems.
Apr 21, 2018 12:21PM PDT

We've gone over that so what's left is for you to decide your next move.

If you are skipping advice like checking with the SSD maker for a health check app, I can't know that. I expect members to test, check and report back. It's asking a lot but cheaper than a repair counter or tossing new parts in.

Check

I will check if i can find any apps like that.

Any information that helps here?

I do see a firmware update is available.
Apr 21, 2018 1:33PM PDT

You should do this after backups of what you can't lose.

Why it calls it healthy, the smart values suggest there are issues. It's not dead, it's just not in top condition from what I read. That is, not in a warranty situation.

The only way to tell if this is a problem is to try a perfect drive with this one unplugged.

I still think the GPU driver version has to go back to when it was great and the GPU temp is way hot for not in game use.
