Question

Formatting used SSD so it can be used in another computer

Mar 20, 2018 9:40PM PDT

I will be taking a 250 gig SSD out of my Granddaughters computer and replacing it with a 1T SSD. That is no problem as I have done several of those and have everything needed.
What I have never done is format a used SSD so it can be cloned and used in another computer. Have another relative that can use the old SSD in his laptop. Both computers have Windows 10.
Any advise will be very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Answer
If you are going to clone to this drive

There is no need to format it. Just clone to it and what's on it will be replaced.

Formatting is unnecessary and since SSDs are only good for so many writes you would use up a write needlessly.

Thanks Bob.

They will be the Samsung SSDs and I use their migration software so that makes it very easy.
Thanks again.

Bob. Just a follow up

I did as you suggested and it worked fine.
I never noticed before, but the Samsung migration software tells you it going to format/erase everything that's on the disc before cloning starts.
Thanks again for your advise, it's going to make the others I do in the future much easier.

Anything that makes it easier is a step in the right direction.
