Formatting SD and CF cards

Apr 22, 2005 3:20PM PDT

The manufacturer suggests formatting the expansion SD and CF cards before use. I just got this pocket PC and I have yet to find any documentation or found a format utility that came with the PDA. Do I need to purchase a utility program like Pocket PC Mechanic or am I not finding the proverbial snake in the grass?

One thing.

Which Pocket PC do you have? And mention the version of the OS so we can comment.

I'd note something but with a dozen versions out there, I will not type all the possible answers.

After reading 'consumer ratings' on about 50 products, I ran into one that expains the problem. The Manuals and Help files that come with this iPAQ do not spell out what you can and CAN NOT do. The one consumer rating I read stated that Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Second Edition does NOT format SD or CF cards. That makes a lot of sense since that is two of the three cards this PDA supportsWink

Thank you for pointing me to a good sounding product.

Do you happen to know a good source for preinstalled SD expansion card software? I am finding that software for PDAs is hard to find.

Thank you again for the help, I really appreciate it.

Just sharing.

As an author of some Palm OS software, I can write I have little trouble finding applications. And if I don't find it, I can write it.

-> My current client subcontracts a company to place the software I've written on SD cards.

OK, I'll set the hook. When and where do you make your software debut on SD cards?

I am familiar with the large storage of notebooks and computers. These PDAs are a tricky bunch. Is the concept generally, load most used on the PDA, then use the rest either install/uninstall, temporary memory, and flash memory cards? Is that roughly the idea?

Thanks again for helping me out.

Already out.

But its an "industrial" type application for setting up embedded controllers. Not much of interest to the general public.

Sorry, but your second question isn't well formed. In short I think you are asking how PDAs use RAM and other memory. That depends on the design and there are many. On the Palm, a program can't run off a card, but it seems like to some since you tap on the program and behind the scenes it is copied to real executable RAM and run. Then on exit, the memory is freed up. Some databases can stay on the card in some applications.

Yup, that's what I mean.

Again, thank you for the help. I am sure you'll be seeing my posts in the future.
