Question

Formatting CDs and DVDs

Jul 10, 2019 1:24AM PDT

Hi, I am using a Dell laptop with an external cd/dvd drive. I am trying to copy both CDs and DVDs, however each time I try I am told the disks need to be formatted and each time I try to format them the process halts after about 85% saying Windows cannot complete the task. I have tried 3 different makes of CD always with the same result. I am beginning to suspect my cd/dvd writer. Can anyone help please.

I've never needed to format a cd or dvd if I copied using imgburn (free download) via an .iso file on my hard disk. I didn't even need an external drive is my PC/laptop has an internal one.

What method did you try?

I tried copy and paste and drag and drop for a folder containing photos to a cd.
My laptop does not have an internal cd/dvd reader/writer

So you tried to copy the contents of a folder on your hard disk to a new (blank) CD-RW, DVD+RW or DVD-RW? Then you have to format indeed.
But that's quite something else than copy a CD or DVD, isn't it.

Try cdburnerxp (free download) a program, and try a lower speed to format and burn. If you suspect the device, try it on another PC also.
