Is it possible and if it is how do I format a -r dvd.

Re: formatting DVD

Only rewritetable (RW) DVD's can be reformatted to empty them. A -R or +R DVD is written once, without formatting.

XP doesn't do this.

And I don't endorse it. Try recording software such as CDBURNERXP and simple single closed sessions.
