OS contained on bootable cdrom - no install needed
It's good for people who are unsure of what they want or need from Linux. or just to try different distro's for the best one

Do you want to replace 98 with Linux, or dual-boot 98 and
Linux? It will affect how to proceed. chuck

Install Linux

Agree with advise you already have, i.e. at least the Linux distros I have tried so far, do their own formatting (repeating in your own case). I have dual-booted several Linux distros with Win9X, and it works well, but if you still want to use some Win version (some Linux distros may not have drivers for some of your hardware), a "Live Linux CD" is a good starting point. MEPIS, Knoppix, DSL, and Puppy Linux ("Chubby" Puppy is only 91.4MB) work very well, but my favorite is now "Puppy", since it is innovative, versatile, and unlike the "full size" distros, runs very fast, entirely in RAM.

Don't forget serial modem

I forgot to mention (you may know already) that you need a serial/external/hardware modem if you are on dial-up.
