Format Hard Drive

by mick2222 / April 5, 2009 4:08 PM PDT

Hi,

I want to format the hard drive on my old computer (which is running on Win XP Professional), before I get rid of it.

How can I create/get hold of a bootable CD, that has the necessary files, to:

Boot the computer (outside of C:).
Format the hard drive (non-partitioned).

Cheers,
Mick2222

Do you mean to wipe the drive clean

or to format and re-install?

If you mean to wipe the drive clean without anything else, look up DBAN in Google, ("Darik's Boot and Nuke").

If you want to re-install XP, then you can reformat and re-install from the XP CD that came with the machine.

Thanks Mark,

Yes, I just want to wipe the drive clean, so I will try your DBAN suggestion (which, I have never heard of).

Hi Mark,

Just some positive feedback, to let you know that DBAN did precisely what I wanted it to do. Thanks!
